Meet Rabbi Ben, master of Torah, Talmud and Taekwondo, kick-ass computer whiz and a quick study on the dark side of human nature. A knight errant and roving troubleshooter, Ben’s clientele invite him into situations where police are unwelcome and discretion is paramount. When $3 million suddenly appears in a California synagogue's bank account, its leaders wonder if their prayers have been answered—until the money evaporates as mysteriously as it appeared. Where did the millions come from? Where did they go? Ben is hired to get some answers.
Young, single and handsome—in a short, redheaded way—the congregation’s divorcees and unhappy wives scheme to extend Ben’s stay, preferably in their beds. Ben fends off their not unwanted advances; he harbors as many secrets as the synagogue leadership.
When Ben is mistakenly arrested for the murder of Temple Beit Joseph's beautiful administrator, he plunges into a dangerous, confusing world of mirrors where friends become foes and no one can be trusted. Ben’s investigation leads him to a decrepit cemetery, a mysterious private bank, a shofar-blowing part-Korean-Jewish cabinet-maker, a Latino gang-banger, and the ultimate in money laundering techniques. Never mind surviving a hit-and-run murder attempt and defusing a clever bomb in his living room.
You don’t have to be Jewish to be enthralled by Rabbi Ben’s audacity, inventiveness and courage. 1 is an engaging, thrilling read from start to finish.

From the Author
This was my first experience writing fiction (if you don't count tax returns) and as gratifying as it was difficult and frustrating. I hated it so much that I've since written two more Rabbi Ben mysteries, which will be released soon.

WONDERFUL STUFF
By James Dalessandro
I love great mysteries, dark humor, and exotic worlds - exotic as in "it's all a mystery to me." I'm Italian and an atheist: what I know of the Jewish faith is what my Jewish friends care to share with me. I do know that tattoo's are a big no no: hence we know just from the title that Rabbi Ben is painting outside the lines, not necessarily a bad place to start. This is one of those deft, wonderful rides where I don't know whether to grin or shake my head in disbelief at just how wonderfully the characters and plot are interwoven. I'm a huge, huge fan of Michael Chabon's "The Yiddish Policeman's Union", which is a masterpiece. This is way up there: I'm not sure how devout Marvin Wolf and his writing partner are, but a small segment of the Hassidic community will probably want to ex-communicate them - if that's part of the faith - and the rest should wildly embrace a clear distinct voice that renders up the quirks and foibles which make for great writing and great characters. There are missing millions, a short redheaded rabbi with a penchant for Tae Kwon Do, horny divorcees at every turn, and enough personal quirks to keep Woody Allen in movie ideas for a decade. As an outsider, all I can say is bravo. I hope he writes a ton of them. James Dalessandro, author, 1906.

A new mystery series with a unique hero & setting
By V. Kalambakal
There is a lot to love in this book.
I love books that plop you into another world. It doesn't have to be Middle Earth or the 14th century. In this case, the other world is the city I live in (Los Angeles) but a setting I've never explored: Jewish communities and traditions.
This book is rich in detail, but fast-paced and to the point in its plot. I love that no lose ends are left hanging at the end, yet mysteries in Rabbi Ben's past are still to be revealed.
Love the characters, too, though there's one I wanted to slap (you'll figure out who quickly, I'm sure). The seemingly ordinary folks who come to the Temple Beit Joseph in Burbank have secrets, sure, but who could possibly be living a sneaky, illegal life, driven to theft or even murder? Could it be the hot divorcee? The slightly hysterical professor? The sexually-ambiguous seaman on leave? The Hassadic thug? (never thought I'd put those two words together)
Since another love of mine is Los Angeles history, this book entertained me with its anecdotes--all true--about my city. A cache of weapons and law books found in the basement of a high-rise, the complicated ownership of Hillside and other cemeteries, the vegan restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley--all real, and all adding to the story. I heartily recommend this book and will be one of the first to buy the next Rabbi Ben mystery.

Gripping
By Lisa-catherine Cohen
I was gripped by this whodunit from page one! The plot--that soon became a multiplicity of them--was so riveting I will admit that I gave up sleeping. I can't remember when I've read a story or seen a movie with such engaging characters and so many interrelated but followable plots, all interconnected--at almost every turn of the page--and all resolved so surprisingly...well, other than the cliff hanger at the end that leads us into the promised sequel.... I especially loved the rabbi! What a great idea for a lead character! He's a Jewish 007.
John Grisham, beware! John Grishowitz (Marvin J. Wolf) is around the corner.
Although I finished the book a couple of weeks ago, the characters came so alive for me, I can still feel them and see them and care about them. I can hardly wait for the next in the series!
(I feel like Kathy Bates in that horrifying movie wherein she cuts the legs off of James Caan so she can "possess" him, because he wrote a character in his book she couldn't wait to read more about; I won't go that far, I promise!)
But please, Mr. Wolf, hurry up and write the next one!
