In an effort to stay on top of changes not addressed in Strunk and White, AP, or The Chicago Manual of Style, Hale and her fellow editors at Wired magazine waded through the "shifting verbal currents of the post-Gutenberg era" to determine where jargon stops and the vernacular of digiculture begins. This annotated glossary includes technological terms, phrases, acronyms, and idioms commonly used on the Internet, World Wide Web, news groups, and online forums. Wired's style sheet shows how to incorporate an e-mail or Web address in prose, how to deal with hyphens, and how to make a plural of the computer mouse. Although they prefer mouses, mice is also acceptable. (Remarkably, Douglas Engelbart, who invented this ubiquitous pointing device in 1964, hadn't given the matter much thought.) By taking on the colloquial online voice, the editors reach into the heart of the Net to help writers who may be composing e-mail, business letters, term papers, or articles--anyone who wants to use the new parlance more effectively. Oh. My. GAWD.

Having read through the first edition, I looked forward to the next, which was supposed to be organized like a real style guide (read: The AP Stylebook and Libel Manual) and less like an in-your-face, smarmy declaration of war against English. At least the editors of Wired accomplished that much, renaming some key writing principles like "Screw the Rules" with "Be Irreverent."
But you really have to wonder about a style guide which quotes Entertainment Weekly -- that's right, Entertainment Weekly, that standard bearer of educational enlightenment -- not once, but TWICE on its back cover. This means that the publishers had a hard time coming up with complementary quotes to fill in the space. I work as a copywriter for a book publisher, and to quote the same publication twice on the same cover is simply bad, bad form -- only the most desperate of publishers do so.
Little wonder why EW reviewed this book -- after all, Wired Style is SO funny, like the little jab it takes at hackers when defining "Trojan Horse":
"The work of dark-side hackers. A seemingly innocuous program that hides a malicious virus.... the word is proof that hackers read the classics."
Ha. Ha. Isn't that smart? Because we all thought hackers hadn't read the classics, and wouldn't know what a Trojan Horse is. You'd never find this kind of "humor," this smartalecky take on English usage, in the New York Times Manual of Style and Usage.
It IS useful to have an guide to help explain such terms as "Trojan Horse," "Watermark," and "dpi" in context of the Web and computers (thus the two stars), but Wired Style has a long way to go before it can compare to the authoritative works such as the NYT and AP guides -- which do not, despite Wired Style's continued claim in both editions of their guide, force writers to call Bill Gates "William H. Gates III, chairman of Microsoft Corporation." (This claim is based on a general rule for identifying people who are not immediately recognizable to the general public -- Bill Gates doesn't qualify. The editors at Wired really should know better.)

Not a very useful stylebook

As a copy editor, I have to try to find a consistent spelling for terms that appear regularly, some of which are not yet in the dictionary. In 1998 I bought the 1996 hardcover version of this book, thinking it would fill in the gaps dictionaries and other stylebooks have left regarding how to consistently spell "website," "webpage," "email," "e-commerce," "Internet," "intranet," etc. It was the only book I saw on the subject back then. The capitalization of "Internet" makes some sense, but capitalizing "Web site" and making it two words does not really, especially since in the 1999 revised soft cover version they add the possibilities of lowercased, unhyphenated single words like "webzine" and "webmaster" (not Webmaster, etc.). The insistence on not hyphenating "email" but hyphenating "e-commerce" ends up making an article I edited look ridiculously inconsistent. I had "Web site," "intranet," "Internet," "email," "e-commerce" and other terms all appearing in the same story. And let's face it, everyone spells it "website" in email (e-mail?) except the authors of this stylebook. I find it useless and hope to find a better stylebook for internet and other techno-specific terms that considers the needs of copy editors.
Thank goodness for the book's index re: finding what I was looking for though!

High Cyber Snoot Factor

If you're not careful, reading this book could make you feel pretty hip, pretty web-savvy, and maybe even a little superior; but you might feel a little dirty when it's all over.
First off, and most importantly, Wired Style isn't a style book. Strunk & White for the web, it ain't. That book hasn't been written yet. Wired Style is certainly written in the Wired style, but it provides mostly definitions and few examples of usage.
Wired Style *is* funny sometimes, witty sometimes and condescending often. It may help you learn a fair bit about the web. I could even say it's an engaging read. But it's not gonna help you become a better writer, which is what style guides are intended to do. A better-informed writer? OK.
So, essentially, Wired Style is, you know, it's pretty snazzy, rad, awesome, boss. It's da bomb. It's way cool. (Sorry, I guess you get the point.) Which means it'll sound pretty out-dated within a few years. But it makes for a light, fun, superiority complex-inducing read right now.
For those concerned with "e-mail" versus "email," "web site" versus "website" and other similar dilemmas, just strive for consistency in your own writing. Also, hyphens usually disappear over time, so if you're typing "email" instead of "e-mail," you're just ahead of the curve; we'll probably all be writing it that way eventually.

A useful and engagingly written resource. This book will be especially helpful for graduate students and early career professionals, but I suspect more senior scientists will enjoy reading it as well. I am going to highly recommend this book to my graduate students, and as a resource for graduate writing seminars in my department.

About the Author
Andrea Simonne grew up as an army brat and discovered she had a talent for creating personas at each new school. The most memorable was a surfer chick named "Ace" who never touched a surf board in her life, but had an impressive collection of puka shell necklaces. Eventually she turned her imagination towards writing. Andrea still enjoys creating personas, though these days they occupy her books. Fire in all the right places!

I loved this book! It was passionate and funny and I could barely put it down. I fell in love with Declan, one of the main characters. I didn't think I would at first, since he's not your typical hero, but the more I read the more I thought he was an irresistible character.

It opens with Kate running into her old boyfriend Ben, who broke her heart years ago. The book takes you from the present to the past in the first few chapters, showing Ben and Kate's relationship. It's really fun and you totally get why Kate never got over Ben. He comes back into her life at the same time that things are heating up with Declan, a reformed Irish bad boy. I also quite like Kate, as she is reliable and has a great sense of humor. There's a lot of witty dialogue with some super funny situations. It's definitely steamy too (those scenes are superb!). Fire Down Below is a very fitting title!

The book gives me that feeling of falling in love. The romance is so real. I could go on, but I don't want to give everything away. I will say one more thing though, that some of the love scenes really moved me - especially in the second half of the book. They were so emotional and intimate. I wish this author had a backlist! Another wonderful story by Ms. Simonne

I read Year of Living Blonde three days ago and throughly enjoyed it. So I purchased Ms. Simonne's other two books, just finishing Fire Down Below this morning. The story was delightful and I truly appreciated that it was a stand alone with no cliffhanger. Don't want to give away any spoilers, but glad Kate got her HEA. Would have loved an epilogue to see what happens 2, 3 or 4 years later.

This book is a solid 4.5 stars. I loved the story and it written very well. Declan is the absolute best. You will truly love him. The chemistry between he and Kate is beautifully portrayed., you will not be disappointed in this one!

“Quantitative Finance for Dummies” is a highly readable and accessible book

The “For Dummies” series exists to explain complicated subjects in a simple way. This is hard (I speak from experience). Also the more complex the subject, the harder it will be to write this kind of book. It probably doesn't get much harder than Quantitative Finance (unless you're currently trying to read Quantum Physics for Dummies). Author Steve Bell, who has brought us “Quantitative Finance for Dummies” (Wiley, 2016), clearly relishes a challenge. He has risen to it admirably.

Let's start with what this book is not. It's not an attempt to replace text books such as those by the likes of John Hull and Paul Wilmott which cover this subject in more advanced detail. Nor is it for the lay reader who is curious about this weird discipline but has no interest in getting any deeper understanding (something like Scott Patterson's book “The Quants”, Gillian Tett's Fools Gold, or "The Predictors" by Tom Bass would suit them better). Instead it's aimed at two groups – aspiring or potential quants, and those working close to quants who want to better understand what they do.

As well as covering the usual pricing models there also sections on risk and portfolio management, and on market trading and strategy. It's great to see these here – there is much more to being a Quant than pricing exotic derivatives (especially post 2008).

Some maths is inevitable in this subject, but this is kept to a minimum, and interspersed with plenty of more intuitive explanations. Real world examples are plentiful, and make the maths more palatable.

If you've read a “for dummies” before you'll know what to expect in terms of structure and layout. This isn't to everyone's taste but there is no denying that they get the information across effectively.

More than anything, this book helps you to think like a Quant; or at least understand how Quants think.

“Quantitative Finance for Dummies” is a highly readable and accessible book which does a great job of introducing a wide range of topics to non specialists working in the industry, and readers considering a career or academic course in the discipline.

Great content. Great quality. Highly recommended to anyone interested in finance. This text was very detailed and content appropriate for syllabus. It also has accompanying essential fundamentals to understand basics. It might be used as a short summary to Finance exams at University or the well known certificates such as CFA level 1, ACA or exams for technical analysts. The fighting that waged across the Philippines during World War II ranks among the most vicious in the annals of war. Nearly 80,000 Americans and Filipinos were taken prisoner on Bataan, the name of which is forever linked with the notorious "death march." During the three years that Japan occupied the archipelago, 130,000 American and Filipinos were killed. Prisoners in Japanese prison camps were 10 times as likely to die in captivity as soldiers held by the Germans. When they returned to retake the islands, American troops preferred not to take any prisoners at all. Gerald Astor gives voice to the soldiers who participated in this gruesome period of world military history.

War's raw brutality pours over the pages of Astor's fourth book (after Operation Iceberg) to chronicle WWII combat by drawing heavily on firsthand accounts of American vets. In examining the Philippines' fall to the Japanese in 1941-1942, the consequent suffering of civilians and American POWs and the U.S. counterattack in 1944, Astor criticizes Douglas MacArthur's judgment in the war's initial stages, defends his decision to counterattack and considers pointless his later extension of operations to the southern islands. The author's more valuable work here, however, is his reconstruction of the frontline experience. In this up-close and personal view of the Philippines campaign of World War II, Astor (Operation Iceberg: The Invasion and Conquest of Okinawa in World War II, LJ 4/15/95) has provided "a mosaic within the context of the times" to bring this long struggle into view for modern readers. Interspersing a lively narrative that provides detailed background with individual perspectives on what happened, Astor introduces the reader to this crucial Pacific campaign from the viewpoint of both the individual soldier and military leaders. He expresses opinions on many topics, such as Douglas MacArthur as a military leader, the American war plan for the Pacific, and Japanese policy toward POWs. Oral histories like this one take on added significance considering that ten years from now, most World War II veterans will no longer be around to give voice to those years when they sacrificed for their country in its time of need. Resiliency -- borne out of necessity defeats evil at it's core.

The author of this historical WWII tribute is Gerald Astor. He effectively weaves 84 oral histories together to form a cogent picture of the peaks and valleys of the war in the Pacific, 1941-1945. In addition to these firsthand accounts are a constellation of testimonials given from various admirals, generals and their staffs that played pivotal roles in defeating the Imperial Japanese Army, (IJA).

The predominate story line focuses on the confluence of events in the Philippines, and it's struggle to rid the country from its IJA invaders. This includes the fight on Bataan, (and its subsequent death march), Corregidor, Zambales Mountains, the Lingayen Gulf landings, (IJA and later MacArthur and company), Leyte, Hell Ships, and about a half dozen of the more notorious prison camps located on Luzon, Mindanao, and Palawan Islands -- all part of the Republic of the Philippines. Also islands mentioned and glossed over are Panay, Cebu, Negros, and Mindoro. So as you can see there's an awful lot to track in this snapshot in time, perhaps too much, hence my 4 star rating.

The hardships endured from mother nature alone included bouts of malaria, dysentery, dengue fever, jungle rot, and other nefarious maladies. Notwithstanding, the Japanese and their cruel, harsh, torturous treatment of their captives illustrate how deprived the human spirit can sink to. The systemic starvation diets alone took its gratuitous toll as well. For example, upon arriving to Camp O'Donnell via the Bataan Death March, there was an estimated 42,000 Filipinos, and 8,675 Americans incarcerated. Within two months 1,500 Americans and 20,000 Filipinos succumbed to death via starvation and its biggest contributors; beriberi, (lack of protein in the diet), and little to no medication to treat the mosquito born diseases listed above. These death rates were ten times higher than experienced at German POW camps. Unconscionable.

All in all, with the maniacal banzai raids and poor leadership of the IJA, the Japanese listed over 300,000 of their troops killed in action while defending their ill gotten gains in the Philippines. On the flipside, 131,028 Filipinos, and Americans died. Most of which were civilians in Manila when that city went through the grinder in 1945... Complements of the land-locked Japanese Navy, (sailors without ships). Staggering numbers. The LtCol of the IJA known as the, "Butcher of Manila", would eventually hang for orchestrating these murderous war crimes.

Standard Oral History of the Battles of the Philippines

Gerald Astor is one of those guys who writes oral history of various World War II battles. This is one of his books, a pretty good one, but since the battle is so complicated things get a little lost.

The Philippines were the setting for a considerable amount of fighting during World War II. The Japanese began their attack on the islands within hours of Pearl Harbor, and invaded within days. When they conquered the last of the islands in the Spring of 1942, they began consolidating their hold on them. Two years later, American forces returned, invading first one island and then another, reconquering much of the archipelago before the Japanese surrendered.

This book chronicles the experiences of American army and army air officers and men during the battle, along with a few sailors. The author provides a brief summary of each action that took place, and then gives you one after another oral account of the fighting that took place, pretty much all of it from the American point of view. There are a very few accounts from civilians (none Filipino) who were present during the fighting. There aren't any accounts from the Japanese side, either. The narratives from the American soldiers and other participants are interesting, but since the overall narrative is so confused, the author has a hard time providing context for what's going on. After a while, the book becomes rather confused, and the whole story bogs down.

I generally find oral histories to be interesting, provided the author works hard to give some context to what's occurring. Here, sadly, the author fails in this regard. The book does provide the oral history itself...but nothing else, really.

Completes this often skipped chapter of WWII

What do you know about the Battle for the Philippines? Like most, you probably know that: 1) The Japanese invaded, 2) There were intense defensive delaying actions fought at Bataan and Corregidor, 3) MacArthur escaped vowing "I shall return!" 4) Captured survivors suffered greatly in their forced march from Bataan, and 5) Later, MacArthur did triumphantly return and everyone lived happily ever after. But there's much more to this battle than all that. Read about how MacArthur altered the defense plan for the archipelago from the original US plan and why he did so. See how the Imperial Japanese Navy almost dealt a blow to the US Naval Task Force. Learn why MacArthur was portrayed in the limelight (it wasn't personal vanity as some might think). But most of all, experience the bitter conflict through the eyes of the men who made it possible, and also paid for it. Astor's work is very readable, informative, and entertaining.

Empowering

I have been a teacher for many years and have been searching for a tool like this book for a long time! After pouring over the pages with delight, I feel empowered to be a better teacher. I now have an easy guide that will allow me to clearly communicate to my students my expectations. The aide of this book will enable me to quickly and efffectively draft lessons that set my students up for acheivement. I will now be better able to evaluate my students writing and will be easily able to know if their content is appropriate for their grade level. The wonderful examples set forth by the author give the reader clear ideas of how to make lesson plans more exciting for any student. The personal touch set forth by the author makes the book easy to read and truly leaves one feeling empowered to make their day and their students day exciting and rewarding for all.
