About the Author
A younger brother of Major General Nguyen Van Hieu, Tin Nguyen was a high school teacher in Vietnam during the war. He escaped Saigon to the US 7th Fleet in one of the USMC Chinook helicopters on April 29, 1975. He is now a guidance counselor in a NYC public school and is the webmaster of generalhieu.com.

Virtue and Corruption in the Viet Nam War

This text presents and illuminating perspective into the highest Vietnamese traditions, and is a fitting posthumous tribute to a ranking member of South Viet Nam's highest military cadres. Written as a sibbling biography, it is richly peppered throughout with mild bias, something freely acknowledged by the author, which nevertheless does not detract from the wealth of objective information, and data that are only enriched by a personal, if family-oriented point of view. This book extolls the virtue of Vietnamese tradition with the highest esteem, as exemplified in this in-depth analysis of one man's contributions to his motherland, set against the backdrop of one of southeast Asia's most tragic and sad chapters in history. Factual information is well presented with adequate supporting documentation and numerous pictures give this historical personage a very vivid and intimate familiarity. The details of some of the information presented can be simultaneously revealing and startling. This book is well-balanced in the extremes: One man's virtues and rapid progression through the military ranks being consistently contrasted with the insidious prevalence or corruption or corrupt practices by the government which he is sworn to protect and defend. The admiration of the author for the Major General lies in stark contrast to the shameful behaviors of so many government officials at all levels, including the presidency, which must bear the brunt of the responsibililty for the eventual downfall of the government of the Republic of Viet Nam. "I am only the instrument of my brother. General Hieu's biography is a self-expression ... General Hieu drew a clear-cut line between the two military and private life areas. This explains why he was able to maintain his integrity and virtue while working with other corrupt and low-moral generals ... The majestic aura that soldiers perceived in General Hieu's personality came from his inner strength, not from an artificial majesty requiring the use of a general's baton, or a combat camouflaged outfit, or a cigar, or an imposing guard detail, etc... And thus they genuinely respected and loved him dearly ..." General Hieu was assassinated in his office headquarters on 8 April 1975. This biography depicts ARVN Major General Hieu under different facets: his personal life, his military career, his military exploits, and his unjust death. It reveals General Hieu as an unsung hero, whose tactical and strategic skills put him among the best soldiers of modern times, at par with General Rommel of Germany, Patton of the United States, Montgomery of England and Leclerc of France.

An Uncommon ARVNB General

This biography, a reader would notice at the outset, is not written by a historian, an investigative reporter, or a professional biographer. It originates instead from the pen of a younger sibling seeking to resolve the mystery surrounding his brother's untimely death. This legitimate curiosity has evolved into a collection of articles depicting General Nguyen van Hieu as a family man, a patriot, a military strategist, and a man of integrity. This collection of articles authored by siblings, friends, and fellow military men unexpectedly converges to project a dynamic image of an intelligent soldier and brilliant strategist engaged in the twofold quixotic task of overcoming a corrupted military hierarchy and fighting the invading North Vietnamese communist army. The book presents the reader with glimpses of a man living the yin aspect of the Vietnamese society (egalitarian, flexible, spiritual, congenial) and, at the same time, confronting the yang aspect of the neo-Confucianist military and government hierarchy (male dominant, rigid, self-serving, elitist, concerned with face and status). Without any claim to being systematic or thorough in his research, the author has nevertheless gathered a number of revealing personal anecdotes, testimonies from living witnesses, declassified documents from the National Archives, letters from former military academy classmates, phone interviews, excerpts from books, and so forth. From this cacophony of voices emerges the image of a virtuous man, caring father, loving spouse, and competent general respected by Vietnamese and American military personnel of all ranks. The reader would no doubt be surprised to discover this unsung hero in the stark background of negative memories of the Vietnam War and betrayal of the Vietnamese people by the neo-Confucianist military and government hierarchy. Though modest in its presentation, the book manages to do justice to a dedicated soldier and competent general, who is mostly unknown to both the Vietnamese and the American public. After reading this fascinating biography, the reader comes away wondering what might have been had this uncommon general, who epitomized the true Vietnamese people, been allowed to fully exercise his military competence.END

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Joel F. Houston is the John B. Hall Professor of Finance at the University of Florida. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College. Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Houston was an Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Joel's research is primarily in the areas of corporate finance and financial institutions, and his work has been published in a number of top journals including THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Professor Houston also currently serves as an Associate Editor for the JOURNAL OF MONEY, CREDIT AND BANKING, the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL SERVICES RESEARCH and the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMIC POLICY. Since arriving at the University of Florida in 1987, Joel has received 19 teaching awards, and has been actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate education. In addition to co-authoring leading textbooks in financial management, Dr. Houston has participated in management education programs for the PURC/World Bank Program, Southern Company, Exelon Corporation and Volume Services America. Joel enjoys playing golf and tennis and spending time with his wife (Sherry) and two children (Chris and Meredith). He is an avid sports fan who follows the Florida Gators, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

The rebel hero of Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) careened through his life like a firework across the American art landscape. PROFOUND ANALYSIS OF OUR MODERN MATERIAL CULTURE

Vaclav Smil’s book is a fascinating and thorough analysis, on how the use of materials in our civilization has evolved from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The main argument is revealing: We, the collective humanity, have seen a relative dematerialization (less raw material per device) and declining energy intensity (energy expended per unit mass) driven by gradual improvements, substitutions, intensified recycling, and introduction of entirely new devices. On the other hand, the growing populations and improving quality of life have translated into a steadily rising demand for most traditional materials and greatly expanded production of new materials. Smil’s conclusion is that in all cases there has been no dematerialization in absolute terms at any national or the global level.

Smil displays a polymath’s knowledge of technology, economics, history, and policy. Be warned: The book is filled with data, and must be read thoroughly. Expect a whirlwind of units for mass, power, and energy. The data are not always presented attractively: Often they are recited in the text, making dense reading. Arrangements in graphs or tables would make a mush easier way to absorb the massive amount of information presented and interpreted.

Starting with the use of all materials over the course of human history, Smil concentrates on the prevalent materials of our material culture: Metals (steel, aluminum), biomass (timber, paper), plastics, glass and cement, fertilizers, industrial gases, and semiconductors (silicon.)

I found reading this book an exhilarating experience: I literally could not put it down, and I heavily annotated my copy. The arguments were compelling and well substantiated. My main criticism has to do with not bringing into the picture the technical capabilities of modern composites and catalysts, and with the apparent lack of the materials selection ideas presented by Mike Ashby and his colleagues at Cambridge in the last twenty years.

I would also identify a full absence of discussing sustainability, especially as driven by the possibility of global climate change. Clearly absolute dematerialization and global climate change have little to do with relative dematerialization, given the fact we all live in a finite world enclosed by a finite atmosphere. Relative dematerilization may be good for national policy but not so for global issues facing our collective humanity.

A fascinating account by professor Smil on global material extraction, use, and after-use through the centuries, and sobering thoughts on ecological pressures and future developments. The large middle part of the book is digested with difficulty; the very detailed number crunching is overwhelming. One comes away wiser, however. Exhaustively referenced, including many web links. Less appreciated: the price is steep, non-functional index at the end of the book,(the Kindle option bar activated TOC works), editing errors at times. Recommended for those who want a higly detailed view on the subject.

What do we do when we run out of Smil?

Smil looks at economies their cities, machines, high-ways, farms, vehicles, airplanes and he finds music in statistics. Tonages, gallons, watts, Joules, Newtons and populations. He must compose the score of this music in his head. Musical though made of numbers not numerical, instinctive not contrived. This latest of Smil’s brilliant books repeats statistical music we are familiar with from earlier studies but this work is more extreme, Smil breaks into a dance celebrating his fond dream of de-materialization. In earlier books such as the recent “Should we Eat Meat” Smil has made clear his distaste for greed and extravagance. We humans, especially Americans indulge ourselves. We needn’t eat steak at every meal, drive there ton SUV’s. His statistic crowded studies should be effective because he employs “science” and skirts tiresome scolding’s we have become immune to. De-materialization brings on excitement. The music of statistics isn’t enough to accompany man’s great accomplishments. De-materialization promises technical ecstasy. Lighter and lighter aluminum beer cans. 85 grams for the first, now only 12.75 grams. More and more powerful yet lighter internal combustion engines. Jets and rockets so powerful they may overshoot outer space. The facts are assembled and referenced in studies that make your head spin as Smil accelerates intricate numerical observations. Sadly the de-materialization dance ends in a somber switch as Smil accepts defeat switching from ever lighter beer cans, jet engines and computers to what we strangle and clog our roads with, huge heavy cars.
Smil carefully documents their ungainly mass as dependent on the price of oil, like a biologist charting the size of pigeons and the acorn crop they feed on. This part of the story leaves Smil crestfallen. This disappointment after what can be done by de-materialization. In a later chapter Smil disagrees with our perennial mongers of shortages. “We are soon to run out of …..” our real dilemma is more complicated for our end will not come from exhaustion. We can mine scrap, dig deeper, invent substitutes. We suffer self inflicted damage; struggle to make ourselves fat and unhappy. Reading his rebuttals to those predicting exhausting oil, gas, phosphate, copper etc. I found another worry; running out of Vaclav Smil. Born in 1948 how many more years of wisdom can we expect?
This book is not perfect, Smil is a carrier of a modern sickness, the over use of initials. This leaves the reader out in a wilderness; what does this mean? How can the author be proud of switching to code when he could remain with well understood English?

Moon Charania is a visiting faculty member at Spelman College. She has published essays in various journals and collections and has taught queer theory, global perspectives on violence against women, and feminism, sexuality and Islam at both Tulane University and Georgia State University. She lives in Atlanta.
