Poorly written with bad English
By muns
That author has very poor command over the English language. When I browsed the contents of the book the recipes seemed interesting and I thought finally I can be more creative with avocados than just eating them plain in my salads or with sugar as a treat. But unfortunately I was not able to follow a single recipe for the lack of proper writing. Thankfully I got this book when it was listed as free. Do not spend your time or money on this.

Grammar?
By M. Gibel
I'm not sure if this book was translated poorly or just not edited. The forward is extremely painful to read, as is some of the recipe descriptions. I haven't made a recipe yet, hoping for the best.

Review
"This book is one of a very few about VLC, written by and for a technical audience, primarily researchers in the field. Unlike other books on VLC, this one does not delve on basic concepts about light sources or modulation formats, but goes straight to the technical matter."

I am glad to have this book in my library because it both describes and exemplifies philosophical Satanism very well. It may also be useful for people who are interested in alternative forms of spirituality but are having trouble freeing themselves of the shackles of mainstream religion/churchianity. It's quite a powerful read in that respect.

Collision: Interarts Practice and Research, by David Cecchetto

With very few exceptions, interdisciplinary art and interarts practices - examined as such, including the perspective of artist-researchers, and not subsumed under a singular category of performance or visual art - have, until now, been largely ignored. While it would be simplistic to think that this collection somehow rectifies the 'piecemeal' status of this discourse, our wager is that this collection works towards presenting an understanding of this status as, in a certain sense, constitutive of the field. Beginning with an introduction to the very multiplicities that compose and complicate interdisciplinary practices, then moving into questions of body/technology, location/movement, space/practice, performativity/aesthetics, this collection covers an enormous amount, while still retaining an overarching sense of unity in the context of the subject as a whole. Each of these sections negotiates a series of interrelated collisions in order to address a range of theoretical positions, as well as a variety of international and cultural perspectives. In addition to addressing the notion of interdisciplinarity and the challenges of specific interarts practices, this publication seeks to question how we might understand interarts practice in a way that does not exclude perspectives such as spirituality, law, political activism and community development, to name only a few. The inclusion of these disparate practices within this publication - itself a site of collision of the poetic, the conversational, and the theoretical - is thus not presented as an attempt to unify or normalize them, but rather as a productive charting of their radical explosion; a collision that is always a colliding.

Review
The essays here take 'collision' in its full range of significances, deftly tackling such elusive and difficult topics as the interdisciplinary sublime, melancholy and digital performance, and the phenomenology of pain. Varying from dense theoretical disquisitions to creative diary entries, the contents open up new vistas in the resurgent consideration of interarts production and interdisciplinary inquiry. Coherent even in the huge scope they cover, these essays provide a startling and provocative snapshot of the current state of interartistic thought and practice. They challenge, outrage, entertain, and engage often all at the same time. --Dr. Stephen Ross, associate professor, director of English Graduate Studies and Director of the program in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought at the University of Victoria, Canada

Review
-Unabashed and undeterred, Peter McLaren offers a new manifesto, written from the 'shabby lean-to room' of the American hall-and parlor house that is revolutionary critical pedagogy. "Pedagogy of Insurrection" is yet another example of Peter's unflinching critique of our contemporary moment of neoliberal capitalism and its contribution to our crisis of democracy. Beautifully written, creative, and broad and ambitious in its conceptual scope, "Pedagogy of Insurrection" offers a radical vision of human possibility and social transformation; a reclaiming of critical pedagogy's connection to a political struggle - a philosophy of praxis. As Peter has argued for nearly four decades, nothing less than a global revolution can be our collective aim and, once again, with "Pedagogy of Insurrection," McLaren has leapt into the breach, challenging, no, demanding that we follow him.-
(Ernest Morrell, Macy Professor of Education; Director, Institute for Urban and Minority Education; President, National Council of Teachers of English; Teachers College, Columbia University)
-In this dark night of the soul of global political economy, "Pedagogy of Insurrection" comes like a wild prophetic yell through the streets that would teach us of the radically democratic demand for revolutionary intolerance that must sound across the planet as never before. Here McLaren's unparalleled pedagogical poetics rises up with new moral urgency to speak true words for and with humanity - an enflamed series of critical communiques from the heart, these almost incantatory and expressionistic critical visions courageously unveil the global imaginary of violent corruption and terror and inveigh against the transnationally institutionalized denigration of the educational hope that we the people may still yet learn that the beloved community can be here now as soon as we demand it. Then, like non-GMO seeds scattered everywhere, this book salutes the diverse movements for the total liberation of life on earth that move us toward the eschatalogical omega point that will be the abolition of the masters of war and their historical domination of nature. Hasta siempre, Comandante!-
(Richard Kahn, Core Faculty in Education, Antioch University Los Angeles)
-The modernist separation of church and state has functioned well to silence both radical discourses of spirituality and public life, even when they might point us toward formidable theological, pedagogical, and communal practices of resistance, insurrection, and transformation. In this unique and courageous revolutionary volume, Peter McLaren cultivates exciting new ground for rethinking a pedagogy and politics of global liberation, including formidable re-readings of historical figures and reasserting their place in the long recalcitrant struggle for human emancipation. At the very heart of this passionate manifesto lies a deep yearning for an ethical world that can propel us beyond the mania of racialized capitalism and its advancing destruction of the planet.-
(Antonia Darder, Leavey Endowed Chair in Ethics and Moral Leadership, Loyola Marymount University, Author of" A Dissident Voice: Essays on Culture, Pedagogy, and Power")
-With "Pedagogy of Insurrection," McLaren again makes it clear that he simply has no equal today in writing revolution as critical pedagogy. In this book, he brings a photorealist poetics to a searing political vision; he applies a street-savvy Marxism and a salvaged Jesus to contemporary social movements. His is a rage against the machine with the facts lined up, with history present, with teeth and heart bared. If this be McLaren's manifesto for a new humanity, it is also, without missing a beat, his Ginsbergian "Howl."-
(John Willinsky, Stanford University)
-With this latest volume, one can almost hear McLaren's pen raging away"

Traffic and Highway Engineering, by Nicholas J. Garber, Lester A. Hoel

The new edition of Garber and Hoel's best-selling TRAFFIC AND HIGHWAY ENGINEERING focuses on giving students insight into all facets of traffic and highway engineering. Students generally come to this course with little knowledge or understanding of the importance of transportation, much less of the extensive career opportunities within the field. Transportation is an extremely broad field, and courses must either cover all transportation modes or focus on specifics. While many topics can be covered with a survey approach, this often lacks sufficient depth and students leave the course without a full understanding of any of the fields. This text focuses exclusively on traffic and highway engineering beginning with a discussion of the pivotal role transportation plays in our society, including employment opportunities, historical impact, and the impact of transportation on our daily lives. This approach gives students a sense of what the field is about as well as an opportunity to consider some of its challenges. Later chapters focus on specific issues facing transportation engineers. The text uses pedagogical tools such as worked problems, diagrams and tables, reference material, and realistic examples to demonstrate how the material is applied.

Just like the prof says
By Tiadaghton
I wished I would have had this years ago. Just like the prof says, it includes the tables you need. My friend used this on the PE. He said he used it a lot. He passed, I failed. The Lindeburg book is horrible for the afternoon. Use this book and work through the problems as a prep. It even had questions/examples of topics identical to some PE PM problems that Lindeburg & my other texts didn't even mention. Maybe I'll pass this time.

Dear Lover: A Woman's Guide To Men, Sex, And Love's Deepest Bliss, by David Deida

Every woman knows the fairy tale: find the right man, give him what he wants and needs, and he'll love you forever. But when the myth you've been asked to believe fails to deliver—when you sense you've been settling for far less than you know in your heart is possible—how do you attract and keep a man capable of meeting what you most passionately yearn for?

In Dear Lover, David Deida explores every aspect of the feminine practice of spiritual intimacy, from sexuality and lovemaking to family and career to emotions, trust, and commitment. Written as a collection of letters from a man to his dear lover, here is this internationally acclaimed writer's invitation to practice love as a living art, as you discover:

  • Why your man is always your choice—and how to pick the man of deep integrity who will satisfy the needs of your body, heart, and spirit
  • “Sexual essence” and the three stages of loving: how to understand your fluctuating capacity to experience divine connection with another
  • Knowing when to end a relationship and how to deal with the “him-shaped void” your absent man leaves behind
  • Daily exercises to help you and your partner move from separation to openness in two-bodies devotional trust

Ultimately, what every woman wants it to give and receive love fully. Whether you’re partnered or alone, Dear Lover reveals that “your love is the same love that years to open at everybody’s heart. You will attract and inspire a man as willing and able to open as you are. Constant yearning is the call to open and give yourself to all as love’s offering.”

Excerpt

Dear Reader,
I offer the following chapters to you as if you were my lover. Although you may be single or married, I offer these words to you as I would do my beloved. We may never meet, but I want to give you the opportunity to feel your heart through mine.
For years, I have taught workshops around the world, opening with women and men while they share their deepest heart’s desires. It seems we often come to know ourselves most deeply through the heart of someone who loves us, who is willing to open and see us as we truly are, who is willing to listen and feel our heart’s yearning.
To give and receive love fully—this is our heart’s true desire, yours and mine. The yearning you feel in your heart is the same yearning that everyone feels. By feeling your heart’s yearning through nine, I hope you will come to know yourself more deeply through the many hearts that have opened together in trust and allowed these words to emerge.
All hearts want to open to God, or the boundless flow of divine love. You may or may not be a religious person, and still your heart years to open without bounds, to be seen and to be offered without limits. This is what I mean by “open to God”—to open and feel everything and everyone’s heart as a divine expression of love.

I bought it for a friend
By ScottSgr
I bought it for a friend after reading The Way Of The Superior Man, this book's companion. She doesn't believe in God and couldn't get past the mention of a higher power, so I guess atheists don't get to benefit from Mr Deida's wisdom. For everyone else, I think he has the best understanding of the male/female dynamic out there.

My friend's other complaint was that the information was too new and too different from what Dr. Phil and everyone else teaches. She said that if the contents of this book were legit then everyone would already know this. That complaint should be an encouragement for every person out there who thinks Dr. Phil is an idiot and is afraid to buy a relationship book for fear that it will contain the same old warmed-over nonsense.

If nothing else, this book contains NEW information, stuff you haven't heard before, stuff I look forward to trying out on the next open-minded woman I meet.

I won't go into a relationship again with a woman who can't grasp this. I think Dr. Phil works for the divorce lawyer's lobby and David Deida is on our side, and since this book is tragically out of print, you can get it cheap and take a chance on finding that one in a million relationship.

Beautifully written but in my opinion highly unrealistic

Beautifully written but in my opinion highly unrealistic.
I love David's work and so I was surprised by the lack of instruction accompanying this work. This book seems to be written as a taste of what women could, or even should expect from a 'real man' without bridging the actual gap that exists between the ideal and the real. Knowing the amazing instructional and philosophical work this author is able to produce, I would only recommend this to 'seasoned Deida readers' or in combination with other work (i.e. maybe you don't want to read 'Dear Lover' first. Purchase it together with another of Deida's books and read it after learning his take on relationship)

A Few Gems, a Little Kookiness, a Lot of Redundancy
By Aspen Leaf
A central question in David Deida's work is: What is sexual love between a man and a woman for? The answer he gives here and elsewhere is that the purpose of sex is to open our bodies and hearts to God, and in fact that sex more than anything else in life is what takes us open to God. "Through entering your heart and body with mine in love's deepest bliss, I open together with you to God."

Deida's distinctive writing style is intuitive and filled with redundancy, so you'll read that message often in this book (which is written as a series of letters from Deida to the reader as his female lover). To me it's attention-getting the first few times he says it but soon becomes mind-numbing. By the end of the book it's enough already!

Still, this book contains some interesting corollaries for women to contemplate. Among them:

* "The secret to unfolding your heart's deepest bliss is to give and receive love fully, with or without a man. . . . You can learn to open your body as if it were a big heart, vulnerable and full of love's radiant life-force. And it is this disposition of openhearted radiance that will gift the world as well as attract and keep a man capable of actually meeting your heart's deepest desire."

* "Whether you are alone or in relationship, your spiritual and sexual bliss require a daily allotment of whole-body pleasure and deep-heart offering, or else your joy will shrivel like an unwatered plant."

* "Deep heart yearning is not a problem to be solved but a divine pull to open as devotional surrender, as wide as all, now. . . . This capacity to offer your open love is indestructible. No amount of rejection or betrayal can destroy this offering of love."

* "Even when you are tense or upset, you can practice surrendering your body and heart to be breathed open by this love that yearns in everybody's heart."

* "Your yearning attracts and inspires love. If you allow your deepest yearning to show through your entire body, you will attract and inspire a deep man."

* You will attract your reciprocal. "Unsurrendered women attract unpresent men."

* "Your secret sexual desire is to be ravished, lovingly forced open in unbearable pleasure, and taken fully open to God by a man of deep spiritual wisdom, strength, humor, sensitivity, and integrity."

* "Few men are capable of entering a woman's heart and opening her body to God's bliss, but few women are capable of offering their heart and body to be claimed open in this way."

* "Men are terrified of a woman's depth of love and the energy that moves as a woman's sexuality and emotions. And, at the same time, men want nothing more in this life than to merge completely with a woman's devotional love and wild energy. Only as a man outgrows his fear can he handle a woman's tremendous love-energy without running. And only such a man is worthy of your devotional offering in a committed intimacy."

* " . . . you settle for a mediocre relationship because you are afraid to be alone. You fill your heart's yearning with an adequate, but not entirely trustable, man. As you grow beyond being dependent on a man, you may choose to settle for an independent life because you are afraid to rely on a man's support."

* "Eventually, you realize that self-sufficiency is a transition phase. . . . Instead of denying your own needs or limiting your love to self-reliant independence, you realize that, more than anything else, you actually yearn to live open as a devotional offering of love."

* "Your concern for career and self-sufficiency is obviously healthy, but your deepest fulfillment may await risking your heart wide open, offering your bright love to all beings, and giving yourself to be claimed - by a man of integrity, by a family of beloveds, by a world that needs your love. Love is the only way to live that won't leave your feminine heart feeling unseen, ungiven, empty, and wanting--no matter how successful your professional life may be."

* "You want him to notice - in fact, worship - your body's radiant beauty and your heart's light of divine love and he wants you to acknowledge and worship his heart's capacity to spiritually and sexually ravish you open to God."

* "If you want to inspire your man's depth of presence and commitment, offer him your feminine heart's deepest yearning, sexually, actively, and devotionally, receiving him into you completely and responding with full pleasure and trust."

* "Men are like trains. They are going somewhere. Choosing and staying with a man is like choosing to get on a train. You will end up going where your man goes, spiritually and sexually, or you will have to get off his train. You cannot change a man's direction to yours without losing trust in his capacity to navigate."

* "A young rigid woman, closed down and energetically dead, is far less sexy than an older woman who offers her heart-open pleasure in surges of abandoned moans and undulating sensuality, whose devotional eyes and mouth and vagina and legs move and open as unquenchable yearning, whose trust is total, who gives her man her deepest heart and every ounce of her own pleasure as a gift for him to feel, worship, and behold--such a woman is agelessly sexy. She is grounded in her heart and generous with love's offering."

* "Besides your heart's pleasure, your heart's pain is also a gift, if given through an open body and heart. . . . But there is a big difference between accumulating your emotions--eventually expressing them in a toxic dump of tense build-up--and being able to spontaneously express every nuance of emotion as the flow opens through you. Spontaneous emotional expression, from your deep heart through your open body and relaxed breath with no closure or tension, is a natural expression of love--even if love is expressed as sorrow, anger, or fear. . . . With practice, you can learn to offer your pleasure, pain, and emotions spontaneously and responsively as soon as they occur, letting go of them instantly, always with your heart open and connecting with your lover's heart."

* "Men constantly crave feminine energy, especially in safe forms that don't demand depth."

* "Men tend to leave relationships too soon, always looking for a better option. Women tend to stay in relationships too long, always hoping that their man will change and grow."

Now for the kookiness. The following little nuggets just seem way, way off base to me.

"Clitoral orgasms are the most superficial orgasms, requiring little if any emotional or spiritual trust--a vibrator can be used to achieve this pleasure. Nevertheless, clitoral orgasms can prepare you for surrendering more deeply." OK, so he's telling us that some kinds of orgasms are more evolved than others. Let's see, didn't we finally get permission some decades ago to jettison the myth of the vaginal orgasm?

The chapter entitled "Choosing Abuse and Refusing Love" is simply bizarre. There Deida asserts that if you choose to wait for a good man, taking care of yourself while your career progresses, your friends grow, and your life improves, you a choosing to be a victim of abuse. Huh? "The mistreatment is not from a man, but from yourself. You are actively closing, protecting your heart from love, shutting down so your body and heart don't ache so openly. You may be damaging yourself as much as any man could damage you. . . . You've grown used to some suffering, and you truly love your well appointed home, your friends, your cat, your garden. . . . you are choosing to play the victim to less love than you know, deep down, you deserve." Oh puhlease!!!

The chapter entitled "On Showing Your Heart's Light in Public" contains this interesting characterization of Deida's own gender: "When your heart is fully claimed by divine love, you have no personal neediness to be seen. Your body is open and flowing, alive with sexual energy, radiant with delight, and resplendent with the shine of love--you don't want to desecrate love's fullness in the oinking barrage of men's psychic grabbing and groping."

A final note. Deida's original contribution to relationship theory is his idea that in our time men and women are working out what it means to be in a stage 3 relationship, with stage 1 being the role-bound relationships of earlier generations, stage 2 being the egalitarian ideal that emerged with the modern women's movement, and stage 3 being based on the understanding that cultivating the male and female polarities in relationship is what keeps sex passionate and bonding. The idea is appealing, but what bothers me in Deida is a subtle flavoring of male dominance, since it's always about "your man's claim," "your man's taking you open to God." Contrast this with the female-pleasure-based paradigm put forth by Regina Thomashauer in *Mama Gena's Owner's and Operator's Guide to Men* and you'll see what I mean. Both Deida and Mama Gena agree that feminine energy is the most attractive force on earth, but I find Mama Gena's ideas more revolutionary.

US Guys: The True and Twisted Mind of the American Man, by Charlie LeDuff

From the New York Times bestselling author of Detroit: An American Autopsy

“A fearless, clear eyed companion into parts of America that rarely see print.”—Entertainment Weekly

Charlie LeDuff has made a career out of his extraordinary ability to capture the spirit of the people and places he profiles. US Guys is his odyssey in search of the truth behind the American man, from a jaded homicide detective in Detroit to a two-bit jockey at a racetrack in Miami to a pair of lovers at a gay rodeo. With audacity, humor, and no small amount of physical pain, he captures a broad diversity of voices as they wrestle with an America they love but increasingly fail to understand.

From Publishers Weekly
Whether fighting the biggest guy at an Oakland biker club, talking race with a semipro Texas football team or riding shotgun with Detroit homicide, LeDuff's gonzo exploits in this book are nothing short of inspired. The New York Times reporter is a big-game hunter, with plenty of ability to sniff out, ensnare and lovingly stuff and mount his subjects. Less an analytic discourse than an "American travelogue," the book searches out "the angry forgotten middling America"—rendering a complex array of American wildlife, from gay rodeo star wannabes to Little Big Horn re-enactors. Though LeDuff's writing often comes off as aggressive and unfiltered, there are many moments when it feels self-consciously stylized, eclipsing an otherwise keen eye for detail. Authenticity surfaces in astute observations ("self-expression is dangerous when too much expression is mixed with too little sense of self"). But LeDuff's quest for edginess sometimes overwhelms his insights, through overuse of words like "cheap" ("cheap booze," "cheap-looking girl," "cheap chromium tanning salons"). His pronouncements on American life (e.g., "meaning is invented in America through new sink faucets and car waxes and aluminum siding in pastel colors") can also miss the mark. Like the hard-luck stories he chronicles, the book is angry, touching, entertaining and flawed—a prologue, one hopes, to greater things down the road. (Feb. 5)

Review
"Mr. LeDuff has a distinct style for committing what the sociologist C. Wright Mills said was James Agee's forte: sociological poetry. . . . [He] has some Damon Runyon in him, some Raymond Chandler, and more good one-liners than a week's worth of machine-tooled sitcoms."
-The New York Times

"A fearless, clear-eyed companion into parts of America that rarely see print."

Grim Tone of Male Misfits
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Each chapter of this book presents a well-detailed, separate profile of a down-and-out male misfit who, struggling, with his sense of belonging or lack thereof, resorts to booze, other addictions, long-winded story-telling, eccentric indulgences, or some extreme macho pursuit or other. LeDuff is a capable writer and an excellent stylist, but his thesis, that the diverse range of contradictory male impulses defy conventional masculine images, is a bit broad and heavy-handed. With a tone that is grim, earnest and too often rich in sanctimony, LeDuff seems to be lecturing us, PBS style, on the "struggles and issues" of working class men. LeDuff is intent on championing his populist cause, so much so that early in the book he criticizes (without naming him) Thomas Friedman for dismissing the working class by arguing that Americans have lost their competitive edge. He'll be damned if he'll let Friedman take such a cheap pot shot and he's going to give sympathetic portraits of gritty working class men and defend them from Friedman's screed. The result is an overly serious, humorless, and in the end somewhat politically boxed-in book. To be fair, I was expecting some more humor, more irony, more playfulness. But I suppose the author felt it necessary to keep everything somber and deadly serious. Too bad because LeDuff is strong talent, he has experienced much around the world, traveling to Iraq for example, and he surely has a lot to say.

Versatile
By Steve Chernoski
Whether blue collar, white collar; whether a pragmatist or philosopher, this book will give you something to talk about. No matter what type of crowd I'm around, a beer hockey league or a wine and cheese party, I can bring up this book as a conversation piece. That rarely, if ever, happens with a book. Worth the read.

SOME of "US Guys"
By Danton M.
I'm sure if LeDuff felt that some white collar writer were lumping all the men of his generation into some group, he'd rant and rave against such stereotyping. But he's eager to do the same, throwing out sweeping generalizations about the men of his generation (once called "X" now called nothing in particular, he asserts). To draw on his experiences at Nevada's Burning Man festival and say his generation "meanders through life without purpose, charting with a broken compass" sounds nice and deep, but in all honesty, are the people who trek into the Nevada desert (or join the gay rodeo circuit, fight-club motorcycle clubs, or bottom-rung football teams) truly the standard-bearers of an entire generation?
Sure, LeDuff, go ahead and write about the down-and-outers, but don't lump everyone else born in the same couple of decades into your groups of directionless losers. Your stories are an interesting look at a small group of disaffected American men, not all of us, so jump down off your high horse of judgement and recognize the limits of your choice of experiences.

The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between, by Hisham Matar

From the author of In the Country of Men, a Man Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, comes a beautifully written, uplifting memoir of his journey home to his native Libya in search of the truth behind his father’s disappearance.

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

When Hisham Matar was a nineteen-year-old university student in England, his father was kidnapped. One of the Qaddafi regime’s most prominent opponents in exile, he was held in a secret prison in Libya. Hisham would never see him again. But he never gave up hope that his father might still be alive. “Hope,” as he writes, “is cunning and persistent.”

Twenty-two years later, after the fall of Qaddafi, the prison cells are empty and there is no sign of Jaballa Matar. Hisham returns with his mother and wife to the homeland he never thought he’d go back to again. The Return is the story of what he found there. It is at once an exquisite meditation on history, politics, and art, a brilliant portrait of a nation and a people on the cusp of change, and a disquieting depiction of the brutal legacy of absolute power. Above all, it is a universal tale of loss and love and of one family’s life. Hisham Matar asks the harrowing question: How does one go on living in the face of a loved one’s uncertain fate?

Praise for The Return

“[Matar] writes with both a novelist’s eye for physical and emotional detail, and a reporter’s tactile sense of place and time. The prose is precise, economical, chiseled; the narrative elliptical, almost musical. . . . The Return is, at once, a suspenseful detective story about a writer investigating his father’s fate at the hands of a brutal dictatorship, and a son’s efforts to come to terms with his father’s ghost, who has haunted more than half his life by his absence.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“It seems unfair to call Hisham Matar’s extraordinary new book a memoir, since it is so many other things besides: a reflection on exile and the consolations of art, an analysis of authoritarianism, a family history, a portrait of a country in the throes of a revolution, and an impassioned work of mourning. . . . For all its terrible human drama . . . the most impressive thing aboutThe Returnis thatit also tells a common story, the story of sons everywhere who have lost their fathers, as all sons eventually must.”—Robyn Creswell,The New York Times Book Review

“A moving, unflinching memoir of a family torn apart by the savage realities of today’s Middle East. The crushing of hopes raised by the Arab spring—at both the personal and national levels—is conveyed all the more powerfully because Matar’s anger remains controlled, his belief in humanity undimmed.”—Kazuo Ishiguro, “The Best Summer Books,”The Guardian

“Few trips could be as emotionally freighted as the one taken by Libyan-raised novelist Hisham Matar in his thriller-like memoir . . .about the post-Qaddafi search for his dissident father—and his own deeply ambivalent sense of homecoming.”—Vogue

“A triumph of art over tyranny, structurally thrilling, intensely moving, The Return is a treasure for the ages.”—Peter Carey

“The Return is tremendously powerful. Although it filled me with rage again and again, I never lost sight of Matar’s beautiful intelligence as he tried to get to the heart of the mystery. I am so very grateful he has written this book.”—Nadeem Aslam

“[The Return] roves back and forth in time with a freedom that conceals the intricate precision of its art. One of the greatest achievements of this outstanding book is a narrative design that keeps us hungry for new information even when we suspect exactly what has happened. . . . Mr. Matar is not a wonderful writer because his father disappeared or because his homeland is a mess: He is a brilliant narrative architect and prose stylist, his pared-down approach and measured pace a striking complement to the emotional tumult of his material.”—The Wall Street Journal

“One comes away from this beautiful book feeling a sense of loss for the Libya that Matar and his father, brother, mother, uncles and cousins all fought for or dreamed of. . . . The effect of the family’s attachments is less sentimental than defiant. And although the author does not want to give Libya anything more, he has, in this profound work of witnessing and grief, given it something indeed: a testimony that, even if shaped by the brutal state, has not ultimately been erased by it. The Return, for all the questions it cannot answer, leaves a deep emotional imprint.”—Newsday

“A moving, unflinching memoir of a family torn apart by the savage realities of today’s Middle East. The crushing of hopes raised by the Arab spring—at both the personal and national levels—is conveyed all the more powerfully because Matar’s anger remains controlled, his belief in humanity undimmed.”—Kazuo Ishiguro, “The Best Summer Books,” The Guardian

“He writes eloquent and precise prose, and his deep inquiry into his father’s imprisonment and absence, and the conflicting details about his death, blend with consideration of Libya’s politics and history, to create a deeply resonant memoir.”—National Book Review

“A masterful memoir, a searing meditation on loss, exile, grief, guilt, belonging, and above all, family. It is, as well, a study of the shaping—and breaking—of the bonds between fathers and sons. . . . This is writing of the highest quality.”—Sunday Times (London)

“At times almost unbearably moving . . . Hisham Matar is an observer and listener of enormous subtlety and sensitivity, and he writes English prose as cleanly and clearly as it can be written. This is a story of terrible deeds, but also a tale of mighty love, loyalty and courage. It simply must be read.”—The Spectator

“A truly remarkable book. From the raw materials of his anger, his suffering, and his guilt, Matar has built a testament to his father, his family and his country. . . . It is a book with a profound faith in the consolations of storytelling. . . . The Return is an act of defiant remembering”—Daily Telegraph (UK)

“[A] magnificent book . . . Deeply affecting.”—The Times (UK)

“Out of his protracted torment Matar has forged a memoir that in its nuance and nobility bears unforgettable witness to love, to courage and to humanity. The Return is also a subtle and nimble work of art. It shifts elegantly between past and present, between dialogue and soliloquy, between urgent, even suspenseful action, and probing meditations on exile, grief and loss.”—Financial Times (UK)

“Mr. Matar’s questions, however, go well beyond politics. This beautifully written memoir deals with the nature of family, the emotions of exile and the ties that link the present with the past—in particular the son with his father, Jaballa Matar.”—The Economist

“[Matar] reveals a suspense novelist’s seasoned instincts . . . A beautifully written, harrowing story of a son’s search for his father and how the impact of inexplicable loss can be unrelenting while the strength of family and cultural ties can ultimately sustain.”—Kirkus (Starred Review)

“A magnificent memoir of exile and loss. Hisham Matar writes Libya’s contemporary history with a Proustian sensibility and the intellect of Al-Jahiz. A timeless read.”—Rawi Hage

“The Return is a personal memoir, concerned with the kidnap and disappearance of the writer’s father at the hands of the Qaddafi regime. It is wise and agonizing and thrilling to read.”—Zadie Smith

“What a brilliant book. Hisham Matar has the quality all historians—of the world and the self—most need: He knows how to stand back and let the past speak. In chronicling his quest for his father, his manner is fastidious, even detached, but his anger is raw and unreconciled; through his narrative art he bodies out the shape of loss and gives a universality to his very particular experience of desolation. The Return reads as easily as a thriller, but is a story that will stick: A person is lost, but gravity and resonance remain.”—Hilary Mantel

“The Return is a riveting book about love and hope, but it is also a moving meditation on grief and loss. It draws a memorable portrait of a family in exile and manages also to explore the politics of Libya with subtlety and steely intelligence. It is a quest for the truth in a dark time, constructed with a novelist's skill, written in tones that are both precise and passionate. It is likely to become a classic.”—Colm Tibn

1. Trapdoor

Early morning, March 2012. My mother, my wife Diana and I were sitting in a row of seats that were bolted to the tiled floor of a lounge in Cairo International Airport. Flight 835 for Benghazi, a voice announced, was due to depart on time. Every now and then, my mother glanced anxiously at me. Diana, too, seemed concerned. She placed a hand on my arm and smiled. I should get up and walk around, I told myself. But my body remained rigid. I had never felt more capable of stillness.

The terminal was nearly empty. There was only one man sitting opposite us. He was overweight, weary-looking, possibly in his mid-fifties. There was something in the way he sat—the locked hands on the lap, the left tilt of the torso—that signaled resignation. Was he Egyptian or Libyan? Was he on a visit to the neighboring country or going home after the revolution? Had he been for or against Qaddafi? Perhaps he was one of those undecided ones who held their reservations close to their chest?

The voice of the announcer returned. It was time to board. I found myself standing at the front of the queue, Diana beside me. She had, on more than one occasion, taken me to the town where she was born, in northern California. I know the plants and the color of the light and the distances where she grew up. Now I was, finally, taking her to my land. She had packed the Hasselblad and the Leica, her two favorite cameras, and a hundred rolls of film. Diana works with great fidelity. Once she gets hold of a thread, she will follow it until the end. Knowing this excited and worried me. I am reluctant to give Libya any more than it has already taken.

Mother was pacing by the windows that looked onto the runway, speaking on her mobile phone. People—mostly men—began to fill the terminal. Diana and I were now standing at the head of a long queue. It bent behind us like a river. I pretended I had forgotten something and pulled her to one side. Returning after all these years was a bad idea, I suddenly thought. My family had left in 1979, thirty-three years earlier. This was the chasm that divided the man from the eight-year-old boy I was then. The plane was going to cross that gulf. Surely such journeys were reckless. This one could rob me of a skill that I have worked hard to cultivate: how to live away from places and people I love. Joseph Brodsky was right. So were Nabokov and Conrad. They were artists who never returned. Each had tried, in his own way, to cure himself of his country. What you have left behind has dissolved. Return and you will face the absence or the defacement of what you treasured. But Dmitri Shostakovich and Boris Pasternak and Naguib Mahfouz were also right: never leave the homeland. Leave and your connections to the source will be severed. You will be like a dead trunk, hard and hollow.

What do you do when you cannot leave and cannot return?

Back in October 2011, I had considered never returning to Libya. I was in New York, walking up Broadway, the air cold and swift, when the proposition presented itself. It seemed immaculate, a thought my mind had manufactured independently. As in youthful moments of drunkenness, I felt bold and invincible.

I had gone to New York the previous month, at the invitation of Barnard College, to lecture on novels about exile and estrangement. But I had an older connection to the city. My parents had moved to Manhattan in the spring of 1970, when my father was appointed first secretary in the Libyan Mission to the United Nations. I was born that autumn. Three years later, in 1973, we returned to Tripoli. In the years since, I had visited New York maybe four or five times and always briefly. So, although I had just returned to the city of my birth, it was a place I hardly knew.

In the thirty-six years since we left Libya, my family and I had built associations with several surrogate cities: Nairobi, where we went on our escape from Libya, in 1979, and have continued to visit ever since; Cairo, where we settled the following year into indefinite exile; Rome, a vacation spot for us; London, where I went at the age of fifteen for my studies and where for twenty-nine years I have been doggedly trying to make a life for myself; Paris, where, fatigued and annoyed by London, I moved in my early thirties, vowing never to return to England, only to find myself back two years later. In all these cities, I had pictured myself one day calm and living in that faraway island, Manhattan, where I was born. I would imagine a new acquaintance asking me, perhaps at a dinner party, or in a caf, or in changing-rooms after a long swim, that old tiresome question “Where are you from?” and I, unfazed and free of the usual agitation, would casually reply, “New York.” In these fantasies, I saw myself taking pleasure from the fact that such a statement would be both true and false, like a magic trick.

That I should move to Manhattan in my fortieth year, as Libya was ripping itself apart, and for this to take place on the 1st of September, the day when, back in 1969, a young captain named Muammar Qaddafi deposed King Idris and many of the significant features of my life—where I live, the language in which I write, the language I am using now to write this—were set in motion: all this made it difficult to escape the idea that there was some kind of divine will at work.

In any political history of Libya, the 1980s represent a particularly lurid chapter. Opponents of the regime were hanged in public squares and sports arenas. Dissidents who fled the country were pursued—some kidnapped or assassinated. The ’80s were also the first time that Libya had an armed and determined resistance to the dictatorship. My father was one of the opposition’s most prominent figures. The organization he belonged to had a training camp in Chad, south of the Libyan border, and several underground cells inside the country. Father’s career in the army, his short tenure as a diplomat, and the private means he had managed to procure in the mid-1970s, when he became a successful businessman—importing products as diverse as Mitsubishi vehicles and Converse sports shoes to the Middle East—made him a dangerous enemy. The dictatorship had tried to buy him off; it had tried to scare him. I remember sitting beside him one afternoon in our flat in Cairo when I was ten or eleven, the weight of his arm on my shoulders. In the chair opposite sat one of the men I called “Uncle”—men who, I somehow knew, were his allies or followers. The word “compromise” was spoken, and Father responded, “I won’t negotiate. Not with criminals.”

Whenever we were in Europe, he carried a gun. Before getting into the car, he would ask us to stand well away. He would go down on his knees and look under the chassis, cup his hands and peek through the windows for any sign of wiring. Men like him had been shot in train stations and cafs, their cars blown up. During the 1980s, when I was still in Cairo, I had read in the newspaper about the death of a renowned Libyan economist. He was stepping off a train at Stazione Termini in Rome when a stranger pressed a pistol to his chest and pulled the trigger. The photograph printed beside the article had the figure of the deceased covered in newspaper sheets, presumably from that day’s paper, which stopped at his ankles, leaving his polished leather shoes pointing up. Another time there was a report of a Libyan student shot in Greece. He was sitting on the terrace of a caf in Monastiraki Square in Athens. A scooter stopped and the man sitting behind the driver pointed a gun at the student and fired several shots. A Libyan BBC World Service newsreader was killed in London. In April 1984 a demonstration took place in front of the Libyan Embassy in St. James’s Square. One of the embassy staff pulled up a sash window on the first floor, held out a machine gun, and sprayed the crowd. A policewoman, Yvonne Fletcher, was killed and eleven Libyan demonstrators were wounded, some of them critically.

Qaddafi’s campaign to hunt down exiled critics—which was announced by Moussa Koussa, the head of foreign intelligence, at a public rally in the early 1980s—extended to the families of dissidents. My only sibling, Ziad, was fifteen when he went off to boarding school in Switzerland. A few weeks later, mid-way through term, he returned to Cairo. We had all gone to collect him from the airport. When he appeared amongst those spilling out of the arrivals lounge, his face looked paler than I remembered it. A few days earlier, I had seen Mother make several telephone calls, her finger trembling as she spun the dial.

The Swiss school was remote, high up in the Alps. Public transport to the nearest village was in the form of a cable car, which operated for only a few hours in the middle of the day. For two days running, Ziad noticed a car parked on the path outside the school’s main gate. It had in it four men. They had the long hair so typical of members of Qaddafi’s Revolutionary Committees. Late one night, Ziad was called to the school’s office telephone. On the other end of the line, a man said, “I am a friend of your father. You must do exactly what I tell you. You have to leave immediately and take the first train to Basle.”

“Why? What happened?” Ziad asked.

“I can’t tell you now. You must hurry. Take the first train to Basle. I’ll be there and will explain everything.”

“But it’s the middle of the night,” Ziad said.

The man would not offer any further explanations. He simply kept repeating, “Take the first train to Basle.”

“I can’t do that. I don’t know who you are. Please don’t call here again,” Ziad said, and hung up.

The man then called Mother, who then telephoned the school. She told Ziad he needed to leave the school right away and told him what to do.

Ziad woke up his favorite teacher, a young Cambridge graduate who had probably thought it would be fun to go and teach English literature in the Alps, skiing between classes.

“Sir, my father is about to have surgery and asked to see me before going into the operating theater. I need to take the first train to Basle. Would you please drive me to the station?”

The teacher telephoned my mother, and she backed up Ziad’s story. The headmaster had to be woken up. He telephoned Mother and, once he too was satisfied, Ziad’s teacher checked the train timetable. There was a train for Basle in forty minutes. If they hurried, they might make it.

They had to drive past the car; there was no other way out. Ziad pretended to be tying his shoelace as they passed the men. The teacher drove carefully down the twisting mountain road. A few minutes later, headlights appeared behind them. When the teacher said, “I think they are following us,” Ziad pretended not to hear.

At the station, Ziad shot into the concourse and hid in the public toilets. He heard the train roll in. He waited until it had come to a complete stop, counted a few seconds for the passengers to disembark and board, then ran and jumped on the train. The doors shut and the carriages moved. Ziad was sure he had lost them, but then the four men appeared, walking up the aisle. They saw him. One of them smiled at him. They followed him from one carriage to the next, muttering, “Kid, you think you are a man? Then come here and show us.” At the front of the train, Ziad found the conductor chatting to the driver.

Very Good Book....Well-Told
By R. R. Costas Jr.
I decided to buy this book based on an NPR radio interview with the author that I heard soon after the book's release. He had such a wonderful speaking voice and delivery that it made me want to buy the book thinking and hoping that his prose would be as beautiful. It is.

In addition, having lost my own father when I was barely 21 (although in much less complicated conditions than the author's), any story about fathers and sons always will catch my interest.

In the end I couldn't give this a 5-star rating. Something was missing and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it is that, while I can relate to the issue of a lost father and memories, I am not muslim or from the African continent...nor am I a political exile. Therefore, I couldn't relate completely to the author's pain and resolve.

What I did get was a good education on Libya, of which I know only what I've seen in the news for the past 30 years. I learned more than I knew about Qaddafi's brutality and of the life of exiles throughout the continent and Europe. The prose is very nice and easy to read....sometimes too easy. I found myself going back to re-read some passages because I had a feeling I might have missed something beautiful or revealing. That was the case more often than I am proud to admit. The author was very successful in putting the reader---at least me---in a situation in which I pictured my father, my family and me in the same situation. It wasn't a pleasant feeling, but it wasn't meant to be. Many of us are very lucky just because we were born in a free country. This book will make you think of how lucky those people are indeed and just how un-lucky many others are.

Overall, I recommend this book as a pleasant, informative, powerful and educational read that will make the reader reflect. It doesn't resolve as clearly as I had hoped, but it is not hard to suppose what happened after the book's end.

I loved this book for its integrity and its understanding of Libya and the politics surrounding this country. I did not like it for how impersonal and cold it sometimes felt. Matar is intense. His singular obsession to find out what happened to his father is understandable. To have a father who clearly loved his country above all else is tough to take--and yet, his father is so admirable, and so weren't many others, who had to suffer because Quadafi was a lunatic. There was so much promise for Libya when Quadafi came into power--but because of the seductive reach of power, all goodness disappeared. One thing is for sure--all those US senators that had to have fifty million reports on the Benghazi incident haven't a clue about Libya.

It won't be easy for Libya in the 21st century/
By GA Knight
I purchased both the book and the audio. I had Hisham on either the BBC or CBC and so wanted to hear the stories in his voice.
The writing was exceptinal and in an unusual sstyle the continually brought me back to what Hiswham was feeling at that point and struck me
withhis determination. I wish all Americans could read and try to understand what his peoples have gone through over the lst century. It won't be
easy for Libya in the 21st century/. The survival of their literature, culture and customs should be encouraged without interference!
