Can the horse really talk?

"Lucky Luke" is a Franco-Belgian comic, extremely popular in Sweden during my childhood and still going strong. Are we to believe Wikipedia, it's huge in Canada as well. But not, alas, in the United States. The comic is a Wild West parody. Perhaps Americans don't like their heroic past parodied by French-speaking Europeans?

Lucky Luke is a poor, lonesome cowboy a long way from home. Or so he sings at the end of every comic album, as he rides towards the setting sun. Naturally, he is also the fastest gunman in the West, drawing faster than his own shadow. He rides a talking horse, aptly named Jolly Jumper. There is some debate among the fans whether Jolly Jumper actually can speak, or whether the creators of "Lucky Luke" have simply translated his whinnying! Another curious character is Rantamplan, "the stupidest dog in the West", who always gets Lucky Luke into trouble.

And there is a lot of trouble in the Old West, even in this parody version. Lucky Luke meets a lot of real characters from Wild West history: Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Calamity Jane and the Dalton brothers. His main adversaries, however, are the "unknown cousins of the Dalton brothers", who are fictitious and more stupid than the real Daltons. Rantamplan is charged with guarding their prison, from which they constantly escape, only to be apprehended by Lucky Luke.

In my opinion, all albums are about equally funny, at least from a European perspective. The parody is good-humoured, but nevertheless feels like a necessary corrective to the overwrought Myth of the West.

In this album, "The Oklahoma Land Rush", Lucky Luke is charged with overseeing the 1889 land run in Oklahoma. His prime task is to arrest bandits and sooners. Curiously, the story ends with the settlers failing, going home and giving Oklahoma back to the Indians, who end up becoming multimillionaires when oil is discovered on their land. If only, if only...

I find it difficult to rate comic books of little consequence, but since I read a lot of Franco-Belgian comics as a kid, I'll give it five stars!

What fun

Lucky Luke is a cowboy that is called in to solve problems. Best as I can tell many of the Lucky Luke series are based on real history. For example, there really was an Oklahoma Land Rush and although we don't know all of the stories from that time, with Lucky Luke thrown in to make everything run smoothly, this Oklahoma Land Rush was funny and interesting.

I have a young 6 year old who is learning to read and who loves cowboys. Lucky Luke has been read over and over again and each time we read it we find more of the visual comedy that the author included in this comic book. I can see where this series would be interesting to a wide range of ages, it is in our home.

everything is going well in oklahoma while new comers race to get the best land simply brilliant gripping and only takes 20 minutes to read so i highley re

I can't join the enthusiasts on this one.

I enjoyed [[ASIN:B008RH5H06 Summer Passions (Seasons of Love Book 1)], but this one dipped too far into fantasy-land for my taste.

THE TAMING OF MISS CAREW 3 stars
Her father lost the family home and she's included in the deed. The new owner/fiance, handsome Greek-god-type, makes a sudden appearance and things move along to the hea.

BRANDED 2.5 stars
This one had possibilities, but Brandon (the H) had such a lamebrained excuse for having left that I was utterly disappointed in him. The h was TSTL for accepting his feeble reason.

THIEF OF HEARTS 1 star (this deserves minuses)
This is so fairytale-ish they should be living in a bluebell sprinkling moonbeams and fairy dust.

Love these Regency collections!

After reading the first collection SUMMER PASSIONS, I have been waiting eagerly for the second one to come out. I love the fact that these are quick reads - 3 different short stories in a row, about 30 pages each - just long enough to read on a bus ride or a lunch break. And they are so much fun - there is humor, romance, and not one, but THREE happy endings! Highly recommended for fans of Julia Quinn and Tessa Dare.

About the Author
Dr Anne Kirkham is a research associate at the University of Manchester. She obtained her PhD in 2007 and has published an article on St Francis of Assisi in Revival and Resurgence in Christian History (Studies in Church History, vol. 44, 2008). Since 2008, she has taught in the department of Art History and Visual Studies and researched, with Cordelia Warr, medieval wounds and has also co-supervised medical students researching dissertations in the history of medieval medicine. Dr Cordelia Warr is senior lecturer in Art History and Visual Studies at the University of Manchester. She has published on Dressing for Heaven (2010), has co-edited two books on art in Naples with Janis Elliot (The Church of Santa Maria Donna Regina, 2004, and Art and Architecture in Naples, 1266-1714, 2010), and is currently working on the representation of stigmata between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries.

About the Author
Lao She was born in Beijing in 1899 and later studied in London where he developed an appetite for English literature. His career saw the creation of works ranging from the local,�Rickshaw Boy—about the moral degradation of a Beijing rickshaw puller, to the science fiction classic, Cat Country, and the much loved play,�Teahouse.

in the spirit of twain or orwell

I just read in the New York Times where Lao She once spoke at a commemoration of Mark Twain. (For a time Lao She was a resident of the U.S.) It seems only appropriate. Although comparisons of this work with George Orwell are only too obvious, there are definitely strains of Mark Twain lurking in these pages as well. This is a bitingly savage satire of Chinese society, as only a fellow Chinese could have written it. Although some of the particulars will no doubt resonate more strongly with those who have actually spent time in China, the general themes of this novel are such as would be meaningful anywhere. Apparently Lao She disavowed this book and his use of humor and satire in favor of an almost equally bleak realism not long after he wrote it, and certainly such later works as Rickshaw Boy and Crescent Moon are also legitimate classics, but in perhaps the most tragically ironic twist of all, he was later hounded to death during the Cultural Revolution in a scenario that could have been lifted right from these very pages that he had written almost forty years earlier. (A fate which even Orwell and Twain did not have to endure).

In my opinion, this is Lao She's best work. Read it.

Oh, and lest we get too smug, there are aspects of this book (the revery leaves, for instance, or the educational system) which strike home in contempoary America as well.

Political Satire A Chinese Astronaut becomes a Feline Drug Lord's Pet

"The Age of Plunder...stealing is an act that most fully expresses a man's freedom; and freedom had, throughout their entire history, always been the highest ideal of the Cat People" In this Swiftian journey to Mars, a marrooned Chinese astronaut becomes status symbol and private security contractor to a drug lord cat in a country of cruelty, cowardice, mindless mimicking, sanctioned mob violence, groundless self-righteousness, false pride and envy, deluded addiction and starvation voyeurism, restlessness, empty form and degeneracy. A country so corrupt that it cannot sustain its independence when militarily invaded. Excellent satire also relentless.
It is poignant that Lao She was hounded to suicide during the Cultural Revolution, in a way reminiscent of this book. But the full significance of Cat Country requires remembering events contemporary to the writing: the Kuomintang's 1931 execution of social realist writers and the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and their installation of the previously abdicated Qing emperor. China had no sovereignty. Opium was used so widely that opium taxes were funding the British, the Kuomintang, and Chinese local governments. Lao She's studies in the UK and its colonies exposed him to modern technology and the fruits of empire. This larger view made Cat Country, the first book of Chinese science fiction possible.

In Medieval Technology and Social Change, Lynn White considers the effects of technological innovation on the societies of medieval Europe: the slow collapse of feudalism with the development of machines and tools that introduced factories in place of cottage industries, and the development of the manorial system with the introduction of new kinds of plows and new methods of crop rotation. One invention of particular import, writes White, was the stirrup, which in turn introduced heavy, long-range cavalry to the medieval battlefield. The development thus escalated small-scale conflict to "shock combat." Cannons and flamethrowers followed, as did more peaceful inventions, such as watermills and reapers.

A great work that connects technological and social history

This is one of the classic works of medieval studies to emerge out of the past half century, and its importance far outstrips whether or not White's famous stirrup thesis is correct or not. The overwhelming consensus is that it is incorrect. But only someone who has not read the book could imagine that that thesis was the bulk of the book, or the only idea in it. In fact, there is an unstated, larger thesis that underlies White's book, and which indicates why it is important: White implies that we can only understand the medieval period if we also understand its technology. White virtually ushered in the age of the study of medieval technology and seeing it as intimately connected and underlying the social and even political history.
This is a short book, shorter than it initially seems upon holding it because of the vast number of foot and endnotes. But the number of ideas and insights are completely out of proportion with the book's apparent brevity. It is absolutely stuffed to overflowing with content. Miraculously, that doesn't effect its readability. Even a relative neophyte to historical studies will have little difficulty following White's ideas and arguments, although, obviously, the more one knows, the better the background one will have for understanding his theses.
Although his stirrup thesis has largely been rejected, this remains an essential book on any short list of the great works of medieval history. More than that, it is fun, too. I strongly recommend it to anyone with the slightest degree of interest in medieval history.

Jammed full of information

Although this book has been around for awhile, it represents a truly amazing source of information on the role which technology played in Medieval society. I thought that the first two parts of the book, dealing with changes in technologies of war and agriculture and their effect on Medieval society were by far the strongest part of the work. At times, I found the meticulous description of the archaelogy and etymology of various objects and words a bit much, but I was fascinated by the way in which White linked technological progress to the emergence of numerous aspects of Medieval life. I didn't enjoy the final section, on machinery, as much because it seemed to loose its focus on the social changes caused by the technology, although it did mention the new ethos that mechanical development fostered. I have done some more reading on the subject, and some critics have argued that White overstates the importance of the stirrup, but regardless about where the various historical controversies are today, this book provides a superb introduction to the field and would be a great resource to anyone doing research.

Relevant, not outdated

This book was part of the PhD curriculim at a top-tier university for Public Policy. The course was Science & Technology Policy I (a massive literature review before getting into our own research).
Whether or not the chain of events and relationships occurred precisely as White postulates is irrelevant.
The POINT is that small, technological change can have GIANT impacts upon life and social organization. This has been proven repeatedly by the researchers/students of complexity science (see Mitchell Waldrop, Murray Gell-Mann, Roger Lewin, John Holland, etc.)
By connecting medieval technological change (eg agrarian practices, stirrup, clock) to societal change (eg feudal system, settlement/town patterns), this book provides readers with a conceptual starting point to begin thinking about the impact of modern and future technologies.
In short, its a quick, VERY stimulating and interesting read. With the price at only 2 dollars, you can't go wrong!
