About the Author
Heather MacKenzie, Ph.D., is a speech-language therapist and educator who has spent a large part of her career developing and implementing approaches for enhancing learning in children. Her focus is on translating current research into sound clinical practice. Her Learning Preferences and Strengths model is designed to determine each child’s learning preferences and strengths and then ‘harness’ them to improve the child’s learning and development. That model was introduced in Heather’s first book, Reaching and Teaching the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (2008). Her second book, One Story at a Time (2009), focuses on how to plan, implement and evaluate shared storybook-based intervention with children. Heather has written two other books, The Autistic Child’s Guide presenting spark* and The Autistic Child’s Guide Elementary version (spark*EL). The spark* model has been received very positively by teachers, clinicians and parents and is being used internationally. Heather was prompted to write a book on self-regulation for parents of young children – this is the newest book – Self-regulation in Everyday Life.

Best Cookbook for Kids I've Found!

A few years ago, I searched for a kids' cookbook that I could love and that my kids could enjoy and follow easily. I was so surprised by the variety of cookbooks and the poorly written directions they included. In particular, I remember looking at Paula Deen's cookbook for children. The small print, light type, and colored background... I wanted a better cookbook for my kids! For me, cookbooks are inspiring (even if I almost never follow a recipe exactly)! I ended up finding one that I loved-- Kids Cook!, a Williamson Kids Can book that is now back in print. But, there are no photographs in the cookbook. My kids love color and they are not drawn to that cookbook. On the other hand, a new cookbook arrived at our doorstep last week and my kids hovered over it--drinking in the recipes, excited to cook!

That cookbook is Cooking Class by Deanna F. Cook. A few years ago, Storey published two cookbooks for kids about sewing that I like: Sewing School and Sewing School 2. With this cookbook for kids, Storey followed the same format and editing style--which I loved back then and love again with this new cookbook.

Cooking Class is divided into seven sections that cover the basics, meals, snacks, and of course--dessert! The Basics section is what I have found lacking in most kids' cookbooks, but in this one, it is done well. Good tips, good pictures, and even a page on how to clean up! I like that they added two pages on how to fold a fancy napkins and setting the table. I have a feeling that our next holiday meal will have some beautifully folded napkins!

From there, the recipe sections begin. The recipes are divided into 1, 2, or 3 spoons. 1 spoon recipes can be made by kids themselves. 2 spoon recipes might need an older sibling or parent's help. 3 spoon recipes use sharp knives and the oven/stove, so an adult is most likely needed for kids under 10 or 11. My daughters are 9 and 11 and are uncomfortable with the oven and can turn on the gas stove, but usually prefer me to do that.

The recipes are easy to follow and have great pictures which give clear instructions. The reading level (because of the size of the type) is probably 3rd grade and above. I know that my first grade son can read most of the words in these directions, but the size of the type would be a stumbling block for him.

Our first recipe we tried from the cookbook was the grab and go granola bars. I was a little skeptical about how my kids would like them since they aren't baked, but my whole family ended up loving them! I think next time, though, I am going to try and mix the chocolate chips into the mixture and then press into the pan so that the chocolate chips are mixed throughout the bars and aren't just on top.

I suspect that within a few months every recipe in this cookbook will have been tried by my kids!

Aside from the recipes, the cookbook includes some fun stickers, place cards, and conversation questions for the dinner table. These are of high quality and my kids have enjoyed them all.

I think you get the idea... when choosing a great kids' cookbook, this one tops my list! (and has been added to my list of favorite cookbooks.)

Cooking Class cookbook

I got this for my 8 year old for Christmas and she loves it. She loves looking through it and finding a recipe for us to try. Also, she's more likely to eat stuff that she normally wouldn't if she's involved in its creation :) I remember my mom getting me my first cookbook which I still have and love. I still use the banana bread recipe! Happy with this sweet cookbook.

Well-structured and clear, Saundra Yancy McGuire’s Teach Students How to Learn is as thoughtful about itself as it is about the content it presents. McGuire has composed this book to reflect her own response to and engagement with a pressing problem in higher education: namely, that many students, even those who qualify for admission at prestigious institutions, arrive without ever having been taught to learn by anything but rote memorization. She is an elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations. In 2013 she retired as assistant vice chancellor and professor of chemistry at Louisiana State University, and is now Director Emerita of the LSU Center for Academic Success, which was named the National College Learning Center Association outstanding learning center in 2004. Saundra has presented her widely acclaimed faculty development workshops at over 200 institutions in five countries. Saundra received her B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, her Master’s degree from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellor’s Citation for Exceptional Professional Promise.

Thomas Angelo is Clinical Professor of Educational Innovation & Research, The Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and Director of Educator Development, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Dr. Angelo is known for his efforts in the development of faculty, curriculum and academic planning. Dr. Angelo began teaching in the late 1970’s and since then has worked in various academic capacities at many U.S. institutions including, DePaul University, The University of Miami, Boston College, University of California-Berkeley and Harvard University. Besides teaching, Dr. Angelo has been involved in numerous research projects and seminars in classroom studies and assessment strategies. He founded the Academic Development Center at Boston College, the Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Akron, as well as the School for New Learning Assessment Center at DePaul University. While he served as the Founding Director of the Academic Development Center at Boston College, he co-authored Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers with K. Patricia Cross and later published a second edition in 1993. Dr. Angelo graduated from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a Doctorate in Education in 1987. He currently serves as the Pro Vice Chancellor of Curriculum and Academic Planning at Latrobe University, Australia and before that was the Director of the University Teaching Development Center at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Stephanie McGuire holds a bachelor's degree in biology from MIT, master's and doctoral degrees in neuroscience from the University of Oxford, and a master's degree in opera performance from the Longy Conservatory. She attended Oxford on a Marshall scholarship and a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation. At the Longy Conservatory, Stephanie received the Victor Rosenbaum medal, given yearly to the most outstanding graduate of the conservatory. Partly as a result of long and stimulating conversations with her mother about pedagogy and learning strategies, Stephanie has become a highly sought after private academic tutor in the New York City area. By co-authoring this book, she is delighted to contribute to Dr. Saundra McGuire's admirable and revolutionary mission to make all students expert learners. Since graduating from conservatory, Stephanie has enjoyed forging a successful career as a classical mezzo-soprano. She has performed with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, with the Boston POPS Orchestra in Symphony Hall, and several times at Carnegie Hall.

Practical. Inspirational. Multi-Generational.

This book is in the top three I’ve read in the last 10 years! I’m a fifty-something Baby Boomer, a mother of 3 twenty-something Millennials. The tools, stories, Scripture, statistics, and God-truths apply to both generations. As I read, it affirmed and challenged my own sense of Kingdom assignment. Paul’s genuine perspectives on his own journey to find his callings and purposes ring through with HD clarity.

The book compares happiness with godly fulfillment; calling versus career; and your “sweet spot”—the intersection of your personality, gifts, passions, and life experiences. It describes practical tools, like personality assessments, that will help you identify your personal profile and improve your interactions with others. Paul guides you through questions to determine your passions and how you’re wired. He provides the framework for seeing, hearing, and sensing God’s presence in the process. The questions for discussion at the end of each chapter are outstanding.

I give the book 5 stars for its Spirit-filled voice and outstanding precepts about our godly callings.

A must read for those who develop millennials into leaders!

Paul Sohn has encapsulated the Millennial experience very succinctly! As the Director of Student Leadership Development at a university in the midwest, I read through Quarter-Life Calling and realized how congruent his experience is to the over-all millennial experience. What is great about Paul's book is that it does not simply identify the problem. We're all aware of the issues facing millennials as they search for their calling. Instead, Paul lists several areas in which millennials can identify their passions, desired pursuits, and explore their personal identity. Paul has also been invited to speak at our University's focus on "Destiny", because his insights are so valuable. If you work with and develop millennials, this is a must-read!

"Calling denotes that someone is calling"....

I remember the day Paul Sohn fired himself---it struck me big---to see someone take back their life and in so doing finding their path to pursue their ultimate purpose. Paul does this not only for himself, but has invited many others to join alongside in their own personal journeys with his new book “Quarter-Life Calling: How to Find your Sweet Spot in your Twenties.” This book is not only a guide to finding purpose but a path to the meaningful side of life.
Paul’s admonition of calling is centered in knowing the ‘caller’ which is a powerful concept. I get the unshakeable feeling that this book, while written by a Millennial for Millennials, has a much further reaching audience and impact than intended. Within the pages resides the essence of the overall message of man’s search in life which is encapsulated in the book of Ecclesiastes. There is no meaning in life, at least not in this life as it is, but rather the meaning of life is only found in our understanding of our personal calling and our deep pursuit of Christ.

About the Author
W. Phillip Keller, born in East Africa, always loved wildlife and the outdoors. "The Lord Is My Shepherd"

The Lord! But who is the Lord? What is His character? Does He have adequate credentials to be my Shepherd—my manager—my owner?

And if He does—how do I come under His control? In what way do I become the object of His concern and diligent care?

These are penetrating, searching questions, and they deserve honest and basic examination.

One of the calamities of Christianity is our tendency to talk in ambiguous generalities.

David, the author of the poem, himself a shepherd and the son of a shepherd, later to be known as the "Shepherd King" of Israel, stated explicitly, "The Lord is my Shepherd." To whom did he refer?

He referred to Jehovah, the Lord God of Israel.

His statement was confirmed by Jesus the Christ. When He was God incarnate amongst men, He declared emphatically, "I am the good Shepherd."

But who was this Christ?

Our view of Him is often too small—too cramped—too provincial—too human. And because it is, we feel unwilling to allow Him to have authority or control—much less outright ownership of our lives.

He it was who was directly responsible for the creation of all things both natural and supernatural (see Colossians 1:15–20).

If we pause to reflect on the person of Christ—on His power and His achievements—suddenly like David we will be glad to state proudly, "The Lord—He is my Shepherd!"

But before we do this it helps to hold clearly in mind the particular part played upon our history by God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God the Father is God the author—the originator of all that exists. It was in His mind, first, that all took shape.

God the Son, our Saviour, is God the artisan—the artist, the Creator of all that exists. He brought into being all that had been originally formulated in His Father’s mind.

God the Holy Spirit is God the agent who presents these facts to both my mind and my spiritual understanding so that they become both real and relative to me as an individual.

Now the beautiful relationships given to us repeatedly in Scripture between God and man are those of a father to his children and a shepherd to his sheep. These concepts were first conceived in the mind of God our Father. They were made possible and practical through the work of Christ. They are confirmed and made real in me through the agency of the gracious Holy Spirit.

So when the simple—though sublime—statement is made by a man or woman that "The Lord is my Shepherd," it immediately implies a profound yet practical working relationship between a human being and his Maker.

It links a lump of common clay to divine destiny—it means a mere mortal becomes the cherished object of divine diligence.

This thought alone should stir my spirit, quicken my own sense of awareness, and lend enormous dignity to myself as an individual. To think that God in Christ is deeply concerned about me as a particular person immediately gives great purpose and enormous meaning to my short sojourn upon this planet.

And the greater, the wider, the more majestic my concept is of the Christ—the more vital will be my relationship to Him. Obviously, David, in this Psalm, is speaking not as the shepherd, though he was one, but as a sheep; one of the flock. He spoke with a strong sense of pride and devotion and admiration. It was as though he literally boasted aloud, "Look at who my shepherd is—my owner—my manager!" The Lord is!

After all, he knew from firsthand experience that the lot in life of any particular sheep depended on the type of man who owned it. Some men were gentle, kind, intelligent, brave, and selfless in their devotion to their stock. Under one man sheep would struggle, starve, and suffer endless hardship. In another’s care they would flourish and thrive contentedly.

So if the Lord is my Shepherd I should know something of His character and understand something of His ability.

To meditate on this I frequently go out at night to walk alone under the stars and remind myself of His majesty and might. Looking up at the star-studded sky I remember that at least 250,000,000 x 250,000,000 such bodies—each larger than our sun, one of the smallest of the stars—have been scattered across the vast spaces of the universe by His hand. I recall that the planet earth, which is my temporary home for a few short years, is so minute a speck of matter in space that if it were possible to transport our most powerful telescope to our nearest neighbor star, Alpha Centauri, and look back this way, the earth could not be seen, even with the aid of that powerful instrument.

All this is a bit humbling. It drains the "ego" from a man and puts things in proper perspective. It makes me see myself as a mere mite of material in an enormous universe. Yet the staggering fact remains that Christ, the Creator of such an enormous universe of overwhelming magnitude, deigns to call Himself my Shepherd and invites me to consider myself His sheep—His special object of affection and attention. Who better could care for me?

By the same sort of process I stoop down and pick up a handful of soil from the backyard or roadside. Placing it under an electron microscope I am astounded to discover it teems with billions upon billions of micro-organisms. Many of them are so complex in their own peculiar cellular structure that even a fraction of their functions in the earth are not yet properly understood.

Yes, He the Christ—the Son of God—brought all of this into being. From the most gigantic galaxy to the most minute microbe, all function flawlessly in accordance with definite laws of order and unity which are utterly beyond the mind of finite man to master.

Gives new meaning and understanding to the 23rd Psalm

This is the best book. If you are looking for a Bible study for Psalm 23, look no further. This is awesome. Phillip Keller was a real shepherd, and he thoroughly explains some of the things about sheep that explains the 23rd Psalm in so much more depth. Being that I'm not a shepherd, I didn't totally understand some of the reasoning behind the 23rd Psalm. But after reading some of the explanations of sheep and the things that they do, it brings newer meaning and insight to the 23rd Psalm. This is an older version of the book. The newer versions that are on sale now are only excerpts from the book. This is the actual book itself. Wish he would re-publish this one in its entirety so that more people could study this. This was definitely worth finding a used copy of to study. I have enjoyed it so very much.

This is written by a real shepherd. I learned so much about why God compares our relationship to that of a shepherd and his sheep. There are so many aspects of sheep that we don't know about unless we live with them. All the things he talks about describes our behavior towards God, and God's love and protection towards us.
One small example is the fact that sheep are completely defenseless. They literally have no means of defending themselves, except running. Therefore, they are completely dependent on the shepherd, and when he is not around, they feel nervous and cannot grow healthily.
It is an easy and engrossing read. Highly recommend.

This book A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 is EXCELLENT!!!!!! The only problem I have with this copy is I needed Large Print and I didn't mention that on my order so they sent the normal print. Someone gave me this book exact cover and all several years ago but the print was the large print....I like giving it to some older people in church and we need the larger print...but when I ordered it I didn't see anything to mark so you would know...I just thought it would come like the one I have...I Thank You and maybe I'll see one for larger print the next time.
