My go-to book to give to engaged couples

My wife and I recently celebrated our first anniversary. And in the many books I read on marriage in the time leading up to that wonderful event (and the many books on marriage I’ve read since) (and the many books I read on marriage when in college, getting a minor in counseling), Getting Ready for Marriage by Jim Burns and Doug Fields is one of the best.

That’s a rather unwieldy endorsement, so let me say it clearer. I have a fascination with marriage and romance for a number of different reasons. Chief among these is that marriage has the potential to either be your greatest relationship or our most destructive. A good marriage results in positive intimacy, a closeness that is enjoyed, nurtured, and held in high regard. A poor marriage results in negative intimacy, a sort of forced togetherness where two people tolerate each other for the kids or the tax break.

Obviously, God intended for marriage to be mankind’s greatest human relationship. Obviously, a lot of marriages in our culture, even Christian marriages, have gone terribly wrong. Obviously, we need a way of preparing for marriage in such a way that lessens the shock of suddenly becoming one flesh with another person. And, at least right now, if I had to recommend one book only, it’d be Getting Ready for Marriage.

Getting Ready for Marriage is written as a Now-That-You’re-Engaged-Read-This type of book. It’s a practical step-by-step process that guides you in smoothing out the most common bumpy areas. Chapter 1 begins with whether or not you’re even ready for marriage. Hey, simply the fact you’ve cracked open the book is a good sign. Burns and Fields write that you should “plan a successful marriage, not just a beautiful wedding.”

From here, they move to a discussion about honestly writing your “marriage script.” No, that’s not your vows. We’re talking about hopes, dreams, goals, expectations, and so on. It’s the two becoming one aspect of it all. From the huge questions of Kids: How soon and how many? To the smaller questions with huge implications like Vacuuming: Who is going to do it?, Fields and Burns guide readers into intimate and honest conversation.

The chapters that follow take you through the potentially bumpy areas of In-Laws, Communication, Conflict, Finances, Sexuality, Spiritual Intimacy, and Remarriage. Each chapter weighs in at about 20 pages, so if you’re going through this as a part of premarital counseling, a chapter a week is easily doable. The final chapter offers helpful and practical tips on planning the wedding and ceremony.

As a pastor, this would be the first book I would give a newly engaged couple, whether they come to me for premarital counseling or are seeking it elsewhere.

Worth the money--even for children

My 5th grade son asked for a book about cryptozoology for Christmas, so I recently bought this book after being pointed to it by various reviewers (of other books) on Amazon. It seemed bizarrly expensive--and I felt obnoxiously indulgent buying it--but I can now report it is worth every penny. My son has been glued to the book for a week now and is on his way to memorizing the whole thing. The reading level is adult but a smart kid, fasinated with the subject, will rise to the challenge and chew through all 4 inches in no time.

The bible of crytozoology

A must read for anyone interested in unknown animals. Heuvelmans basically created the field of Cryptozoology. There are a lot of legends and "old wives tales" but this book is very well written and not all in the style of supermarket tabloids or the supernatural crowd.

As of April 2014, there are multiple editions/printings of this book so you should not have to pay $200+ for a copy.

disappointing work by a great author

I had read Abraham Cahan's "the rise of David Levinsky" and loved it. Cahan wrote relatively few novels. So when I discovered this novel by Cahan I bought it. If you want to be extraordinarily impressed by his work buy Levinsky, Not this novel.

Yiddish Forwards long time editor and social radical Abraham Cahan is probably at his time and all time the greatest authority on Yiddish speaking Immigrants to the US and especially New York and the famed Lower East Side.You will laugh and laugh and sigh, sigh with Nachas! All about mariage, work and divorce of Eastern European immigrants, many forced to leave the Old Country persecutions and poverty for the Goldena Medina - America. Yekl, for example, leaves his Kosher and very Religious Jewish wife and baby behind and settle with a job in a garment sweatshop - like most all of them at the time.. Will he bring his wife and baby boy over? Will Yekl ,who
shaves his beard and dresses nattily and gves most of his Yiddishkeit up continue to love his wife? This is about those who wanted so much - to become "Yenkees"- Americans,- not greeners, anymore. The real deal. The wonderful film Hester Street is based on this tale. Enjoy!
