Happy I updated from the eighth edition

I was hesitant to purchase the new edition since my old one still has its binding on it. I am very happy I did. It says there are over 500 new plants. I really like the new section in the back of the book "Gardening, Start to Finish" it includes Plan, Dig, Plant, Containers, and a large section called Grow, it is broken down into sections like; trees, veggies, herbs, vines, natives, succulents, etc.
In the old edition, in the beginning there is a section called "A Guide to Plant Selection" (includes special effects, special situation, and basic landscaping) it is now called "Plant finder". The main difference is the new edition no longer has a symbol for the amount of water each plants uses, however, that information is still listed in the "encyclopedia" section.
Buy it, you will be happy you did, it is the best gardening book you can own!

Another solution would be a separate book like others Sunset offers for specific situations like Easy-Care Plantings

This is THE gardening bible if you live In the west. Go to any nursery and you'll find a worn copy stashed behind the register. Find yourself at a nursery without your copy you can ask to borrow theirs. When I'm stateside I usually carry a copy in the car spring and summer in case I stop at a nursery. It's the undisputed authority on plants out here.
However I have a beef and hence the four checks rather than five. I'm in Hawaii, specifically H1 and eagerly looked forward to this edition hoping there would be some expansion on the section dealing with Hawaii. Alas, there was even LESS included than in the last edition. Go to the local Home Depot and you'll find many plants not included in the book. The stores are all located in zone H1 and info re their suitability to survive in zone H2 where I live is sorely lacking.
So we here in Hawaii are a small group with a myriad of unique plants unheard of in other western states. I think devoting a page or two more would go a long way in addressing our needs here. Another solution would be a separate book like others Sunset offers for specific situations like Easy-Care Plantings, Western Landscaping, Problem Solver, etc.

Truly the Bible for home gardeners

"Sunset" has been the consistent go-to book about gardening for decades, and I've always had at least one! The climate zones are far more useful than those issued by the USDA, the plant lists are helpful, and the plant descriptions and information about growing the plants are very good. I do occasionally find something in a description that's contradictory, in particular statements about the mature size of a particular plant, but almost all descriptions are on-target. I've been gardening long enough that I rarely use the section in the back of the book that describes pests, growing techniques, etc., but I can see that for someone new to gardening it would be a valuable resource.
In the past it seemed that new editions were published more frequently, which meant the plant names in the book kept up with changes in taxonomic names, and that's a bit less true currently. That said, names don't change that often, and Sunset generally notes both the old and new names. Regardless, I'm sure I'll buy the next edition whenever it's published.
The 5-stars are a given, and I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in plants and/or gardening, especially for the price. I contains an amazing amount of good information!
