His hero, if there is one, Clementine of the 3-Balls inherits his great aunt's castle and demesnes and goes from his deathbed to claim it. Within minutes a staggering cast of miscreants, misfits, mad scientists, temptresses and neighbouring members of decayed nobility assault the castle and his sanity.
Clementine/donleavy carries on a "train of consciousness" poetic ramble seldom completing a sentence while cataloguing and examining the sensory overload this occasions as many odd threads make a most satisfying tapestry of decadence and dark comedy.
I agree with others that this may his best work.

As with most of Donleavy's work it's a rollicking good read which entertains throughout but seems to run out of steam with no real resolution of the plot- as if the author either lost interest or deliberately avoids the issue.

Bawdy, clever and pretty damn funny

I got this to reread it after another 20 years. Its just as funny as I remember and find a good balance between tender hearted sentiment and a ridiculous, bawdy free for all. One of Donleavy's best, and a fun place to spend a couple of days.
