Jim Burns is president of HomeWord and the executive director of the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific University. Jim speaks to thousands of people around the world each year. He has over 1.5 million resources in print and a radio broadcast heard on over 800 stations daily. He, his wife, and three daughters live in Southern California.
Doug Fields is the senior director of the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific University. Doug has been a youth and teaching pastor at Mariners Church and Saddleback Church, and has authored over 50 books. He is a passionate speaker and blogger reaching thousands of leaders, teenagers, and parents every year. Doug resides with his wife and three children in Southern California.

My go-to book to give to engaged couples

My wife and I recently celebrated our first anniversary. And in the many books I read on marriage in the time leading up to that wonderful event (and the many books on marriage I’ve read since) (and the many books I read on marriage when in college, getting a minor in counseling), Getting Ready for Marriage by Jim Burns and Doug Fields is one of the best.
That’s a rather unwieldy endorsement, so let me say it clearer. I have a fascination with marriage and romance for a number of different reasons. Chief among these is that marriage has the potential to either be your greatest relationship or our most destructive. A good marriage results in positive intimacy, a closeness that is enjoyed, nurtured, and held in high regard. A poor marriage results in negative intimacy, a sort of forced togetherness where two people tolerate each other for the kids or the tax break.
Obviously, God intended for marriage to be mankind’s greatest human relationship. Obviously, a lot of marriages in our culture, even Christian marriages, have gone terribly wrong. Obviously, we need a way of preparing for marriage in such a way that lessens the shock of suddenly becoming one flesh with another person. And, at least right now, if I had to recommend one book only, it’d be Getting Ready for Marriage.
Getting Ready for Marriage is written as a Now-That-You’re-Engaged-Read-This type of book. It’s a practical step-by-step process that guides you in smoothing out the most common bumpy areas. Chapter 1 begins with whether or not you’re even ready for marriage. Hey, simply the fact you’ve cracked open the book is a good sign. Burns and Fields write that you should “plan a successful marriage, not just a beautiful wedding.”
From here, they move to a discussion about honestly writing your “marriage script.” No, that’s not your vows. We’re talking about hopes, dreams, goals, expectations, and so on. It’s the two becoming one aspect of it all. From the huge questions of Kids: How soon and how many? To the smaller questions with huge implications like Vacuuming: Who is going to do it?, Fields and Burns guide readers into intimate and honest conversation.
The chapters that follow take you through the potentially bumpy areas of In-Laws, Communication, Conflict, Finances, Sexuality, Spiritual Intimacy, and Remarriage. Each chapter weighs in at about 20 pages, so if you’re going through this as a part of premarital counseling, a chapter a week is easily doable. The final chapter offers helpful and practical tips on planning the wedding and ceremony.
As a pastor, this would be the first book I would give a newly engaged couple, whether they come to me for premarital counseling or are seeking it elsewhere.

Amazing book with great advice and insight on how to prepare for marriage. However, I had to read it over twice to have it all really sink in. I definitely recommend this book.
