Good Book for Engaged Couples

If you are getting married - read this book. If you have a child getting married - give them this book and ask the couple to read it together. I had the pleasure of hearing Marilyn speak, then bought the book for my daughter and her fiance'. Though the book is easy-to-read and takes a common-sense approach, this book opened the door for them to easily discuss finances and how they were going to manage them together when they got married. Finances is one of the leading reasons for divorce. Marilyn's sharing of her past and guide for couples makes it easy to open the door to this major area of discomfort, an issue often avoided or not fully disclosed during the engagement period.

Because I know Marilyn, I Have To Say....

Does personally knowing the author make a story more interesting? If so, will my review be biased? I know a few authors and have avoided reviewing their books for that very fear. Early in my book reviewing experience, I was confronted by an irate author whose book I gave a lukewarm review in a magazine. Talk about awkward. He repeated the negative aspects of my review word-for-word over lunch. I swore never again. I made an exception for this book and this is why: the message is significant.
Marilyn Logan, also known as The Money Lady, has appeared on national radio and television. I met her before she landed a show on HCCTV, our local college TV station and before the Dr. Phil Show, The Steve Harvey Morning Radio Show, Les Brown's Chicago Speaks and the Yolanda Adams Morning Gospel Hour appearances. The beautiful, confident woman I know could have never been the woman in the book I just read. Her journey is inspiring. She is open and candid and educated me in financial lessons that I had not learned.
In "I Can't Afford To Marry You! A Guide to Understanding the True Cost of Love" Marilyn takes us through personal financial failure after failure, exemplifying John Maxwell's description of perseverance in Failing Forward: Turning Mistakes into Stepping Stones for Success. ".. in life, the question is not if you will have problems, but how you are going to deal with them. Stop failing backward and start failing forward!" says Maxwell. She failed forward and look at the success she has achieved. After reading the book, I realize that we are all in need of reality therapy every now and then and no one is responsible for your financial freedom except you. This is a book teaches by example. Are you where you need to be in terms of your fiscal goals and why not?
It is not a "how to" book, Marilyn does have great advice throughout, but I see it more as a "why you should". If you are looking for a good read on how to achieve financial confidence, I would recommend Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey. His book is a step-by-step cookbook to overcoming debt. "I can't Afford to Marry You" is a wake up book. This should be a graduation present to every high school or college student.
