Learning from the Jesuits

As a junior at a Jesuit High School, the adminstration gave me this book as a gift for leading the upcoming freshman retreat. I had already fallen in love with the Jesuit spirituality, but this book sealed the deal. For Lent, I promised myself I would read one prayer each morning, and I have, and enjoyed it. It makes everyday worthwhile. As the Jesuits believe, we choose each day to make a journey towards or away from God. This book helps make that journey. Ad Mejorem Dei Gloriam.

In this brilliant work, first published in 1936, Sydney Hook seeks to resolve one of the classic problems of European intellectual history: how the political radicalism and philosophical materialism of Karl Marx issued from the mystical and conservative intellectual system of G.W.F. Hegel.From Hegel to Marx traces the writings of the young Marx from is early Hegelianism until the genesis of his own distinctive world-view on the eve of the European revolutions of 1848. Rather than merely compare Hegel and Marx, Hook recreates Marx's debates with his associates and contemporaries of the late 1830's and early 1840's, known collectively as the Young Hegelians: Moses Hess, Bruno and Edgar Bauer, Arnold Ruge, Max Stirner and Ludwig Feuerbach. Marx only arrived at his theory of historical materialism, Hook argues, through a series of critical exchanges with each of the Young Hegelians.

Sidney Hook analyzes the two philosophers utilizing opposition among Hegelian and Marxist theory: ethical idealism, dialectics, and continuity. This allows the reader to adopt the differences between the two influential authors,thereby introducing major theories written by Marx and Hegel. The remaining chapters interject comparisons between Karl Marx and esteemed German philosophers who studied Hegel, contributed or correlated with Marxist philosophy. Overall, the text forms an essential basis to the understanding and development of Marxist philosophy, and the struggles of a young-Hegelian in the nineteenth century.

This book was a realistic portrayal of the various aspects of political, social and professional life there, as well as a most interesting memoir which could be enjoyed by anyone. Understanding active boys

I have a three year old Grand son who is active but usually under control. This book brings an excellent understanding of why boys function the way they are. I highly recommend this book for those who are involved with boys and adolescents to help foster a solid foundation to be a well functioning adult. Most of its evidence is based on scientific articles and there was little relating to anecdotal experience as being causal for there behavior, although anecdotes were used to illustrate a point. I found it very enjoyable to read.

My first exposure to Gurian's theories was in the book "The Minds of Boys"... well worth reading.

The overwhelming thrust of this book is the need for boys to have a reference group around them - older men, dad's friends or colleagues, men in the neighborhood with little boys, men with older sons, older boys to take an interest in the little guy. Note that not all these guys will be on exactly the same page, but they all have plenty to offer to boys and young men in terms of instruction in ...well... manliness. Courage and self-control, respectfulness and spirituality, love and nurturing, war and politics.

While *all* boys need this sort of reference group, and the cover features three adorable middle-class kids, Gurian emphasizes the desperate need for poor, inner city, or fatherless kids to be around men. He gives all kinds of credit to single moms, but offers plenty of caution there, too. In his opinion, marriage is a profound social contract dedicated to the raising of children and needs support from society.

By about page 115, I realized once again what a great dad my husband is. My kids and I are really blessed.

Two strong takeaways from this book.
1) Make a boy's responsibilities part of his MISSION. For example, his chores are part of his mission to make the family home more comfortable.
2) Gurian introduces a hierarchy of moral development and suggests using a "plus-one" system of discipline - analyze how your child's behavior is progressing, and then let the discipline be a stretch up to the next level. You can read about it on p. 198.

There are not a lot of a-ha moments in this book, but it's a worthwhile read and a mind-opener. What COULD we do to support boy (and all kids) better?

Enjoyable workplace romance!

When Alekos Gionakis, Greek tycoon and CEO of a wealthy ship building enterprise agrees to let his personal assistant Sara Lovejoy take a one month holiday after the death of her mother, he expects her to return and be the same as she was when she left – a competent, efficient, and rather plain looking woman. For two years Sara has been his right hand woman, but never on his ‘male’ radar.

But the Sara who returns to him is not a woman he recognizes at all. She’s cut her hair, gotten a total clothing makeover and now looks like someone he’d squire on his arm to any number of society parties. He suspects it’s a new man in her life, and is surprised at the spark of jealousy he feels. Her attention to the job is the same – but now he can’t keep his eyes off of her.

After working without a vacation for so long, the death of her mother is Sara’s last straw. She’s received a startling revelation – her father is a well known politician with whom her mother had an affair, and had kept the secret of her pregnancy until on her death bed. Revealing the truth to him, her father invites her to stay with him in France and Sara’s vacation, already planned, takes a bit of a detour. Her father’s wife recently passed away and his two children Frederick and Charlotte are unaware of his infidelity and for now he wants to keep it that way, not ready to reveal to the world that Sara is his daughter. But seeing photos of her half sister makes Sara aware of how dowdy she looks in comparison and this is what prompts her total makeover. And she can’t deny that after having a crush on her boss from afar, she’s hoping he’ll see her in a new light when she returns. And he definitely does!

The spark of attraction lit between them won’t be put out easily, and leads instead to an intimacy neither saw coming. When Sara reveals to Alekos who her father is, Alekos realizes that he can use the information to his advantage for business purposes. A fake relationship looks to be beneficial for both of them as it will also give her access to her half siblings without having to reveal her relationship to them – but what happens if they start to have real feelings for each other?

This is my first time reading this author and I enjoyed how everything came together. Sara’s reasons for getting a makeover were her own decisions, not prompted by a male telling her how she looked, which I definitely appreciated. I found the connection between Alekos and Sara believable and their chemistry leads to some sexy love scenes. Alekos’s brother died when he was younger and Alekos believes it was suicide due to a broken heart. This has tainted all his relationships with women and made him leery of commitment so he struggles with his feelings for Sara.

The latter half of the story deals with a lot of issues – Sara’s family, Alekos’s family, Sara’s job and desires for her future, Alekos’s company problems, and the conflicts between the show they are putting on for the public as a committed couple versus the reality behind the scenes. It all adds up to an entertaining plot, lovely settings (including some aboard Alekos’s yacht and his Greek island hideaway), a sexy romance and an eventual happy ending. If you like workplace romances with handsome Greek devils and competent, smart women, you'll enjoy this story.
