Educational Philosophy

In our many years of teaching introductory statistics courses, we have continually searched for ways to improve the teaching of these courses. Our vision for teaching these introductory business statistics courses has been shaped by active participation in a series of Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business, Decision Sciences Institute, and American Statistical Association conferences as well as the reality of serving a diverse group of students at large universities. Over the years, our vision has come to include these principles:

Students need a frame of reference when learning statistics, especially since statistics is not their major. That frame of reference for business students should be the functional areas of business—that is, accounting, economics and finance, information systems, management, and marketing. Each statistical topic needs to be presented in an applied context related to at least one of these functional areas.

Virtually all the students taking introductory business statistics courses are majoring in areas other than statistics. Introductory courses should focus on underlying principles that non-statistics majors will find useful.

The use of spreadsheet and/or statistical software should be integrated into all aspects of an introductory statistics course. In the workplace, spreadsheet software (and sometimes statistical software) is usually available on a decision maker's desktop. Our teaching approach needs to recognize this reality, and we need to make our courses more consistent with the workplace environment.

Textbooks that use software must provide enough instructions that students can effectively use the software, without the software (and instruction) dominating the course.

The focus in teaching each topic should be on the application of the topic to a functional area of business, the interpretation of results, the presentation of assumptions, the evaluation of the assumptions, and the discussion of what should be done if the assumptions are violated. These points are particularly important in regression and forecasting and in hypothesis testing. Although the illustration of some computations is inevitable, the focus on computations should be minimized.

Both classroom examples and homework exercises should relate to actual or realistic data as much as possible. Students should work with data sets, both small and large, and be encouraged to look beyond the statistical analysis of data to the interpretation of results in a managerial context.

Introductory courses should avoid an overconcentration on one topic area (such as hypothesis testing) and instead provide breadth of coverage of a variety of statistical topics. This will help students avoid the "I can't see the forest from the trees" syndrome.

APPLICATIONS

Updated and improved Using Statistics business scenarios—Each chapter begins with a Using Statistics example that shows how statistics can be used in one of the functional areas of business—accounting, finance, information systems, management, or marketing. This scenario is used throughout the chapter to provide an applied context for the concepts. The following are the Using Statistics scenarios presented throughout the book:

• Hundreds of new applied examples and exercises, with data from the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and other sources have been added to the text.
• Visual Explorations—Provided on the book's accompanying CD-ROM are visual explorations that allow students to interactively explore important statistical concepts in descriptive statistics, probability, the normal distribution, and regression analysis. For example, in descriptive statistics, students observe the effect of changes in the data on the average, median, quartiles, and standard deviation. In sampling distributions, students use simulation to explore the effect of sample size on a probability distribution. With the normal distribution, students see the effect of changes in the mean and standard deviation on the areas under the normal curve. In regression analysis, students have the opportunity of fitting a line and observing how changes in the slope and intercept affect the goodness of fit of the fitted line.
• Using Microsoft Office is a new feature. Located at the ends of chapters 2 and 3, this feature enables the student to prepare reports by using Microsoft Office tools. This section shows step-by-step how to paste Microsoft Excel tables and charts into a Microsoft Word document and how to prepare PowerPoint presentations.

EXERCISES

• Answers to most even-numbered exercises are provided at the end of the book.
• Report Writing Exercises allow students to place the results of an analysis in a business context by incorporating Microsoft Office techniques such as pasting ' Microsoft Excel tables and charts into a Microsoft Word document and PowerPoint 1 presentation.
• Internet Exercises, located on the book's web site (www.prenhall.com/berenson), allow students to explore data sources that are available on the World Wide Web.
• Case Studies and Team Projects—Detailed case studies are included at the ends of many chapters. The Springville Herald case is included at the end of most chapters as an integrating theme. SOFTWARE

• Emphasis on data analysis and interpretation of computer output—We take the position that the use of computer software (Microsoft Excel or a statistical software package such as Minitab) is an integral part of learning statistics. Our focus emphasizes analyzing data, interpreting the output from Microsoft Excel and Minitab, and explaining how to use this software while reducing emphasis on doing computations. Therefore, we have added a great deal of computer output and integrated this output into the fabric of the text. For example, in the coverage of tables and charts in Chapter 2, the focus is on the interpretation of various charts, not on their construction by hand. In our coverage of hypothesis testing in Chapters 9 through 12, extensive computer output has been included so that the p-value approach can be used. In our coverage of simple linear regression in Chapter 13, it is assumed that Microsoft Excel or Minitab will be used, and thus the focus is on the interpretation of the output and not on hand calculations (which have been placed in a separate section of the chapter).
• PHStat2 is Prentice Hall's Excel add-in, which provides a custom menu of topics that supplement the Data Analysis Tool of Microsoft Excel. Using Excel and PHStat2, the user is able to perform statistical analysis for virtually all the topics that would be covered in a two-term business statistics course at the introductory level. PHStat2, an updated version of PHStat, includes new features such as tables, charts, and a help system.
• End-of-chapter appendices on Microsoft Excel and Minitab, with screen shots, provide easy-to-follow instructions.

CONTENT CHANGES IN THE EIGHTH EDITION

• Chapters 1 and 2 have been combined into a single chapter ("Introduction and Data Collection"). This updated chapter provides explanation of how to obtain data from the World Wide Web, contains additional chapter review problems on accessing the World Wide Web, and contains a new Using Statistics example involving an e-commerce company.
• Chapter 2 ("Presenting Data in Tables and Charts") contains an updated Using Statistics example, new graphical excellence examples, a section on the scatter diagram, and a section on placing Microsoft Excel worksheet data and charts into Microsoft Word documents.
• Chapter 3 ("Descriptive Statistics") contains an updated Using Statistics example, additional integration of Excel and Minitab output, coverage of the correlation coefficient, coverage of the geometric mean (which finance students especially need), a Visual Explorations module for descriptive statistics, and placing Microsoft Excel worksheet data and charts in PowerPoint presentations.
• Chapter 4 ("Basic Probability") includes an appendix on PHStat2.

Overall I think it's a pretty decent textbook content wise. It could be organized a bit better. One shouldn't have to turn back 5 pages to review referenced illustrations and tables. Also the Excel appendicies steps should be revisited. I had to use YouTube for thorough step by step instructions. This was an overall issue with my classmates as well and I pointed them to the Youtube site and they found the instructions there much easier to follow for the assigned tasks.

Good, but could be better

This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully.

An unnecessary work of insipid brevity.

I should have trusted my instincts. When I read the Table of Contents I thought, "Wow, what a thorough book. BUT how can each topic be dealt with effectively with only a page or so devoted to each subject?" The answer-it can't. And this one certainly doesn't. There's no information contained in this book that you can't find on the internet for free. The writer doesn't ever share any information as if from her own experience, rather you get the impression she read it all in a book or magazine and then cobbled all the information together in one tome for convenience. To wit: Regarding firewood. She states it takes 10 acres of hardwood forest to supply a family with enough firewood for home heating and cooking for ONE year. That's insane. Even if you lived in a polar climate which required heating every day of the year you still would not need 10 acres. If you're looking for books on self sufficient living start with John Seymour's "The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It." If you only have one book on the subject this must be it. For additional reading try "The Encyclopedia of Country Living" by Carla Emery-a wealth of useful information. Also recommended is 'The Ultimate Guide to Homesteading" by Nicole Faires, "Husbandry" by Nathan Griffith, and "The Backyard Homestead" by Gail Damerow. For more detailed works regarding raising a particular animal, solar energy, or preserving food, seek out titles that deal only with those particular subjects in detail. This book is neither a "Guide" or "Manual" as advertised. Unless you're completely ignorant you won't learn a thing from this book.

valued brain dump

Think of this book as sitting down with a friend who's moved off the grid and having them do an afternoon's brain dump of everything they can think of that you'll want to know if you're doing the same.

Is it an exhaustive explanation of each topic as the other reviewer expected and the title might lead one to think? No, it would have to be far longer than 300 pages to do that. But it is everything you want to know in terms of things to be aware of (I thought I'd made a good list before I moved from the city, but I sure wish I'd had this book then) and enough detail about each so you're really oriented towards the significance of aspects of each and what you need to find out more about them. It's like avoiding the 2-3 years initial learning curve because you have a helpful neighbor who clues you in.

I think it would also be a useful book for anyone trying to live a more sustainable and more frugal lifestyle on the grid.

Misleading title

Bought this book on the recommendation from others. I thought from the title it would be what I needed to prepare to use alternative energy resources. Like how to figure out needs, etc.

Personally, I bought it to have some up-to-date knowledge for living without connections to community utilities. I was highly disappointed. It was more of a 'back to basics' living book then living off the grid. They had only a small bit on solar or alternative energy. No great detail.

I actually only read one chapter completely since when I realized what it was, I just skimmed the rest. It did not have any real new knowledge for someone who has been studying the topic for a while. Very very basic primer. I think the REaders' Digest Back to Basics book is better and in more depth.

I feel like I got ripped off. The title is very misleading. It is not even worth the space on my bookshelf so I will be selling this sucker asap.

Now, if I had bought this from a bookstore, I would have been more prepared for the type of book. Since I could not read the copy on the back, I had to go by title/cover page and recommendations from someone.

So, you make your own choice. Great for beginners who want to live a self-sufficient life style. Not worth a penny if you want info about alternative energy info.

With the increasing interest in NodeJS web applications, a new framework, Meteor, has joined the ranks to simplify developer workflows. Meteor is one of the few open source frameworks that has received funding since its early development stages. It builds on ideas from existing frameworks and libraries, offering developers an easy way to develop a prototype app. At the same time, it gives them the tools and flexibility to build a fully fledged production app. Meteor is the weapon of choice for start-ups in today's world.

We start off with a refresher on the basics of JavaScript programming such as templates, CoffeeScript, the Event Loop, and the Merge Box, amongst others. Next, using front-end patterns, you will learn how to create maintainable and trackable forms, and make our site crawlable by any search engine. Finally, you will learn how to deploy a secure production-ready application while learning to set up modulus, compose with Oplog tracking and SSL certificates, as well as error tracking with Kadira.

Throughout the book, you will put your skills to practice and build an online shop from scratch. By the end of the book, you will have built a feature-rich online shop.

Marcelo Reyna is an industrial engineer and a fellow business owner (RetroSoda LLC). While building his company, he realized many business processes could be automated, which is when he decided to take up programming full time. As soon as he realized that programming is his passion, he dedicated 3 years to deeply understand all the aspects of the Meteor framework and how to take web applications built on this into production. Today, he is an avid programmer involved in the technology start-up scene.

Up and Running and with Meteor and learn efficient patterns...

I come from a Java EE background so was looking for a fast paced recipes book.
Found exactly what I needed.

This book contains this most fundamentals instructions from how to set up your development environment from scratch to the introduction to the Front-end patterns and Application patterns, it also include testing Patterns and the most important how to deploy our app to the cloud services.

Although being a small book, the author was able to compact all the necessary information for the best understanding of the reader.
I advice to read this book along with some other reference book or documentation to make the most out of the content that the patterns describe.

What fascinated me more in this book was the fact that I was not expecting to find instruction on how to put my app in production since by the name "Meteor Design Patterns", so you get more than you expected.

The book is worth reading and future reference.

Good Intermediate/Advanced Level Book on Meteor. Beginners should look elsewhere for an introduction

At the time of writing, this book is one of the few advanced level books on Meteor that are available on the market. This book guides the reader on a number of best practices for real world meteor development.
Furthermore, the author of the book has a number of open source meteor packages that I have found very useful in my own work. So he definitely knows what he is talking about. For instance, the author does a good job
explaining the importance of reactive joins in Meteor projects, the author illustrates the problem from a UI /UX perspective but ultimately breaks down the technical DDP aspects of the problem and most
importantly provides practical solutions to implementing reactive joins in Meteor. I am giving this book 4 stars for a number of reasons. Given the fact that the code samples are in CoffeeScript,
the editing could be better. Its a bit of a chore to read and understand a code sample given the liberal use of tabs, lack of commas and absent parentheses. This point brings me to my second gripe with the book.
The book is very opinionated. The author tries to mitigate this in the first chapter but one chapter to introduce Coffeescript, Jade and Stylus is not enough. Readers that are not already versed in these technologies will not be able to gain much from this book.
All in all, its a very good intermediate/advanced level book on Meteor. Beginners to the Meteor framework should probably look elsewhere for an introduction but they should definitely come back once they are looking for more advanced knowledge

I plan on using many of there patterns when building my own Meteor applicaitons

Let me start by saying I am not a Meteor expert just someone in the process of learning Meteor. Also just to be clear when you read design patterns in the title think reusable solutions or good practices not along the concept of the Gang of 4 design patterns. I feel like the advice in the beginning of the book about using JavaScript (Coffee) and CSS (Stylus) preprocessors and HTML (Jade) template engines could probably be used with any modern JavaScript framework. Probably good advice in general. From Chapter 2 on the book is much more Meteor specific in the solutions it presents. The different types of variables available to Meteor applications was a good discussion for example. As someone learning Meteor, many of the patterns were very helpful as I think about building Meteor applications and what needs to be done to make a Meteor application search engine friendly.

The product order/shopping cart example used through out the book is helpful and easy to understand as the features are added to it through out the book.

The book has been a good learning tool and I can see it being a good tool to refer to in the future as well. The design patterns presented should be helpful even as Meteor matures and changes of time.

There are also many atmosphere packages discussed and recommended in the book to help solve specific problem this is a nice add because searching through packages can be a time consuming.

Waste of time and money

If you own the textbook associated with this manual, you already have all of the information it contains. This Solutions Manual goes into the minimal depth to explain the answers and only contains the Odd answers. It looks as if it is a photocopy of the "Answers To Odd-Numbered Problems" in the appendix of the book. Most solutions are exactly what is in the back of the book.

The textbook is also very poor and does little to explain how to do the problems associated with the text.

This book provides no extra explanation of the questions in the book. If you are buying this as a supplement to the text book, save your money, almost all the exact same information is in the back of the book.

Very little effor

If all I wanted to view were the answers I could have just used the back of the book. This solutions manual does the absolute bare minimum when giving solutions. Chapter 7 is the worst by far. If you really, really need help then get the book. But if you don't, you aren't missing much
