PROFOUND ANALYSIS OF OUR MODERN MATERIAL CULTURE

Vaclav Smil’s book is a fascinating and thorough analysis, on how the use of materials in our civilization has evolved from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The main argument is revealing: We, the collective humanity, have seen a relative dematerialization (less raw material per device) and declining energy intensity (energy expended per unit mass) driven by gradual improvements, substitutions, intensified recycling, and introduction of entirely new devices. On the other hand, the growing populations and improving quality of life have translated into a steadily rising demand for most traditional materials and greatly expanded production of new materials. Smil’s conclusion is that in all cases there has been no dematerialization in absolute terms at any national or the global level.

Smil displays a polymath’s knowledge of technology, economics, history, and policy. Be warned: The book is filled with data, and must be read thoroughly. Expect a whirlwind of units for mass, power, and energy. The data are not always presented attractively: Often they are recited in the text, making dense reading. Arrangements in graphs or tables would make a mush easier way to absorb the massive amount of information presented and interpreted.

Starting with the use of all materials over the course of human history, Smil concentrates on the prevalent materials of our material culture: Metals (steel, aluminum), biomass (timber, paper), plastics, glass and cement, fertilizers, industrial gases, and semiconductors (silicon.)

I found reading this book an exhilarating experience: I literally could not put it down, and I heavily annotated my copy. The arguments were compelling and well substantiated. My main criticism has to do with not bringing into the picture the technical capabilities of modern composites and catalysts, and with the apparent lack of the materials selection ideas presented by Mike Ashby and his colleagues at Cambridge in the last twenty years.

I would also identify a full absence of discussing sustainability, especially as driven by the possibility of global climate change. Clearly absolute dematerialization and global climate change have little to do with relative dematerialization, given the fact we all live in a finite world enclosed by a finite atmosphere. Relative dematerilization may be good for national policy but not so for global issues facing our collective humanity.

A fascinating account by professor Smil on global material extraction, use, and after-use through the centuries, and sobering thoughts on ecological pressures and future developments. The large middle part of the book is digested with difficulty; the very detailed number crunching is overwhelming. One comes away wiser, however. Exhaustively referenced, including many web links. Less appreciated: the price is steep, non-functional index at the end of the book,(the Kindle option bar activated TOC works), editing errors at times. Recommended for those who want a higly detailed view on the subject.

What do we do when we run out of Smil?

Smil looks at economies their cities, machines, high-ways, farms, vehicles, airplanes and he finds music in statistics. Tonages, gallons, watts, Joules, Newtons and populations. He must compose the score of this music in his head. Musical though made of numbers not numerical, instinctive not contrived. This latest of Smil’s brilliant books repeats statistical music we are familiar with from earlier studies but this work is more extreme, Smil breaks into a dance celebrating his fond dream of de-materialization. In earlier books such as the recent “Should we Eat Meat” Smil has made clear his distaste for greed and extravagance. We humans, especially Americans indulge ourselves. We needn’t eat steak at every meal, drive there ton SUV’s. His statistic crowded studies should be effective because he employs “science” and skirts tiresome scolding’s we have become immune to. De-materialization brings on excitement. The music of statistics isn’t enough to accompany man’s great accomplishments. De-materialization promises technical ecstasy. Lighter and lighter aluminum beer cans. 85 grams for the first, now only 12.75 grams. More and more powerful yet lighter internal combustion engines. Jets and rockets so powerful they may overshoot outer space. The facts are assembled and referenced in studies that make your head spin as Smil accelerates intricate numerical observations. Sadly the de-materialization dance ends in a somber switch as Smil accepts defeat switching from ever lighter beer cans, jet engines and computers to what we strangle and clog our roads with, huge heavy cars.
Smil carefully documents their ungainly mass as dependent on the price of oil, like a biologist charting the size of pigeons and the acorn crop they feed on. This part of the story leaves Smil crestfallen. This disappointment after what can be done by de-materialization. In a later chapter Smil disagrees with our perennial mongers of shortages. “We are soon to run out of …..” our real dilemma is more complicated for our end will not come from exhaustion. We can mine scrap, dig deeper, invent substitutes. We suffer self inflicted damage; struggle to make ourselves fat and unhappy. Reading his rebuttals to those predicting exhausting oil, gas, phosphate, copper etc. I found another worry; running out of Vaclav Smil. Born in 1948 how many more years of wisdom can we expect?
This book is not perfect, Smil is a carrier of a modern sickness, the over use of initials. This leaves the reader out in a wilderness; what does this mean? How can the author be proud of switching to code when he could remain with well understood English?

Useful in EFL class

A book full of fun activities easy to use in the classroom. Photocopiable, so it saves a lot of time! At the same time, it gives you great ideas, so you adapt activities to your needs. It also has a few pages where you can make your own bingo games for vocab, grammar, etc. I recommend it.

Kimberly KincId kicks of a new series with a must read.

Kimberly Kincaid kicks off a new series with Reckless and I have to say that after inhaling and absolutely loving it, that I have no doubt that this book and the series will be hopping onto a lot of keeper shelves and become instant favourites. I totally loved this book and Alex and Zoe. Hello, firefighters, enough said!

The characters, firehouse setting and storyline will feed your romance loving soul and will leave you feeling both happy that you’ve read it and disappointed that you’ve finished it and that the next book isn’t here yet. But you will finish it with a big goofy grin and with a new appreciation of the fire fighters who put their lives on the line every day and for the people who try so damn hard to make someone else’s life just a little better with a simple meal.

Alex Donovan has to be one of my favourite Kincaid hero’s. No it’s not just because he’s a firefighter. It’s the big heart that hides behind the daring outside that won me over. Yes Alex has no filter on his thoughts and has a reckless streak a mile wide but that’s who Alex is and he’s unapologetic about it. So when after a hot-headed move he gets sent to a soup kitchen as part of his probation he ends up doing a lot more than just biding his time till he’s done. Cue the swoon.

“He’d thought Zoe’s brazen side was beautiful, but her mettle was really just the flip side of her tenderness. God help him, he wanted her. All of her.”

As for Zoe Westin, I want her to be real so bad. I loved her grit, passion and determination to do something that she knows she is meant to do. Even if it means leaving a high profile restaurant to open up a much need soup kitchen in a chancy part of her hometown and with limited funding. This is what makes Zoe happy and she is going to succeed. All she needs is someone one to point out that it’s okay to ask for help. Good thing that comes in the form of Alex and his need to challenge and encourage Zoe.

“She knew she shouldn’t want him, with his rough edges and hot risks. But no matter how hard she tried to fight it, she couldn’t get past the truth. Alex Donovan made her want to break all her rules. And oh, how she didn’t hate it.”

As these two work together in the kitchen, things get hotter and hotter and I’m not just talking cooking heat. There no denying the attraction growing between them, too bad that Zoe’s dad is Alex’s boss and mentor. But after a dare to be reckless and a frightening incident brings them closer, they stop fighting and give in to the sparks. What neither expected was the connection and how deep and strong it becomes in a short amount of time. But when a call to a fire puts their new found happiness in jeopardy, can they find a way to be together and take the ultimate risk or will it prove to be too much?

“Where do you want me now?” Zoe’s eyes flashed open, her expression so sensual and wanting at the same time that it stole Alex’s breath. “Everywhere, Alex. I want you everywhere.”

Throw in some wonderful secondary characters who you will fall for, (I certainly did with Cole) a small town setting and that feeling you get when you read book that you know will stay with you long after you finish the last page and you have the latest bestseller from Kimberly Kincaid.

I don’t really like to compare authors, but if you love Jill Shalvis and Lori Foster, then you will love Kimberly Kincaid. Think small town romances that you can fall into and ones that make you want to pack your bags and move to a fictional town. If you haven’t already fallen in love with Kimberly Kincaid’s writing then you will after reading this book.

Lovely story about two characters, one reckless, the other safe, who both have amazing heart

Alex Donovan has a problem differentiating between brave and reckless... but for what it's worth, his heart is always in the right place.

We open with a warehouse fire that the lead fire chief tells the men to not go in. But Alex, knowing that abandoned buildings are home for the homeless, fights to go in and physically clear the building. After being held back, Alex finally just does what he's told not to do -- and with it, gets reprimanded with community service. The last place he wants to be, and with the last person he thinks he'll ever see -- Zoe Westin, the captain's daughter.

These two, while not with an extensive history, were fun to read. Zoe has her moments of feeling like Alex sees her as a child, and Alex has his moments in feeling like he should be turning his head, closing his eyes, whenever she's near.

Alex with his so-called recklessness, and Zoe with her by-the-book standards and rules, were so much fun to watch. Both played off one another and while one certainly didn't change the other, they worked well together and helped mold the other into a more rounded person. But the one thing both had was heart, and the need to help others.

Zoe was one of those characters you can't help but love. She wanted more from life than to feed the hungry -- she wanted to keep them well. Her heart was huge, and her ability to see the good in people was infectious.

And on my favorite note -- I love when series fold off of other series, and Ms. Kincaid does that with RESCUE SQUAD. We get to see a bit of Nick and Ava from ALL WRAPPED UP and that, seeing old characters from old series, always makes my heart happy.

I love Kimberly Kincaid and she continues to surprise me with every new book I read! I really liked this book. Who doesn't love a book with a hot firefighter and a forbidden romance!

Alex aka "Teflon" (due to his "special talents" and "trouble sliding right off him") is a firefighter at Engine 8. His passion & drive for being a firefighter sometimes causes him to be reckless. Following the rules and listening to his superiors orders is not always his first priority when possible lives are in danger. An incident causes him to be suspended from the job he loves and sentenced to community service at a local "soup kitchen"

Enter the forbidden romance...
Zoe Weston, daughter of Fire Captain at Engine 8, chooses to return to her hometown and run Hope House "soup kitchen" (in a not so safe neighborhood) versus working at a fancy restaurant. She's deciding feeding people the people of her community is more important. Her overprotective father does not approve of her job change, which puts a strain on their already rocky relationship.

See what happens when the reckless fireman has to work for his boss' "off limits" daughter, and she is speechless when she finds out her new "volunteer" serving community service hours is a not only a fireman from her father's fire house, but also someone she had a crush on.

You're going to love the firefighters of Engine 8! I look forward to more books in this series!!

If you've read Kimberly Kincaid's Pine Mountain series, you'll recognize a few characters from All Wrapped Up. I love how the Pine Mountain Series flows right into this new Rescue Squad Series. (As I just finished reading All Wrapped Up, I was excited to see these new characters are getting stories of their own!)

The book assumes a working knowledge of calculus, statistics, and Excel, but it teaches techniques from statistical analysis, probability, and stochastic processes sufficient to enable the reader to calibrate probability distributions and create the simulations that are used on Wall Street to valuate various financial instruments correctly, model the risk dimensions of trading strategies, and perform the numerically intensive analysis of risk measures required by various regulatory agencies.

RupakChatterjee,Ph.D., is an Industry Professor and the Deputy Director of the FinancialEngineering Division at the Stevens Institute of Technology. He is also theProgram Manager for the Accenture-Stevens Financial Services Analytics graduateprogram. Dr. Chatterjee has over fifteen years of experience as a quantitativeanalyst working for various Wall Street firms. His last role before returningto academia was as the Director of the Multi-Asset Hybrid DerivativesQuantitative Research group at Citi in New York. He was also the global BaselIII coordinator for all the modeling efforts needed to satisfy the newregulatory risk requirements. A great book for both experts and amateurs in quantitative finance

When first time knowing this book, it was still a draft and used as notes in Professor Rupak Chatterjee’s course Financial Enterprise Risk Management. After glancing over the material, I found it containing more useful and interesting topics.
The book is as self-contained as possible: basic notions about Financial Market and Instruments are recalled in the first chapter which helps reader envision a general picture about the whole field. At the same time, combining with Bloomberg Screens and Bloomberg Functions makes all these concepts and terminologies so close to the real industry. The second chapter explains fundamental knowledge and methods in common fixed income products. Chapter 3 and chapter 4 introduced many fundamental methods which are widely used in financial files about numeric methods, statistical analysis, stochastic processes and so on. All these topics are foundation bricks for building up a financial engineering building, for example Term Structure of Statistics, Monte Carlo Simulations, Geometric Brownian Motion and Black Scholes formula. These theories are explained comprehensively and clearly in a down to earth level. It really helped me, a graduate student with electronic engineering background, attempting to be familiar with financial field.
Chapter 5 is one of the highlights of this book, which contains Professor Chatterjee’s research topic: discrete time hedging problems using the Optimal Hedging Monte Carlo (OHMC) method. One of the main goals of the OHMC method is to quantify the question of risk capital using a fully simulated P&L distribution of a hedging strategy for a derivative security. Standard option pricing methodologies ("risk neutral pricing", Black Scholes formulas) assume that dynamic hedging works perfectly and therefore the hedger has effectively replicated the option payoff with linear instruments. They make assumptions, which are largely inaccurate, of instantaneous perfect delta-hedging with no friction costs, no bid-offer spread, no transaction cost, no liquidity premium, and no hedge slippage. However, in real life delta hedging, the hedge is rarely perfect and cannot be changed continuously. Therefore, losses may occur between discrete delta hedging points. This hedge slippage needs to be quantified and this is exactly what the OHMC method provides.
Chapter 6 introduces credit derivatives including CDS, CDO and the principles behind these financial instruments. The methodology and process in which a credit product is valuated, hedged and analyzed are explained clearly including default models, survival curve with hazard rates, credit triangle and so on.
Chapter 7 covers one of the most popular topics in recent years, the risk management. In this chapter, not only the useful fundamental method and tools are introduced but also Basel II & III and their effects are explained. Knowledge of these topics is strongly essential for risk management for recent years because the regulations change frequently and strictly.
Chapter 8 and 9 introduce more advanced topics that help people working on relative fields.
I have no doubt that this book will find many interested readers from quants and graduate students in quantitative finance and it can even serve as an introduction to quantitative finance for non-specialist readers with interests in quantitative finance.

I am a professional student in Financial Engineering. This book largely helps me improve my knowledge system in financial engineering. The book details the forefront knowledge and the latest trends on Wall Street, especially for lots of practical mathematical modeling. I think this book is “the Bible” in the finance field.
