- Is it a bunch of pagan symbols “Christianized” for the celebration?
- Why is our concept of Christmas so important for those who don’t believe in Jesus?
- Most may say Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, but are we truly worshiping Him or just celebrating the earthly gifts we give ourselves?
Filled with family get-togethers, office parties, breaks from school, decorating the tree, and more, Christmas is a time of peace and love. So why has so much controversy clouded this sacred holiday? It has become ground zero in an ongoing culture war where Nativity scenes are nixed, Merry Christmas becomes Happy Holidays, and even the word “Christmas” is considered by some as offensive. Find the truth about Christmas and the Christian’s response to a culture that seems to be declaring war.

My Review of "The War on Christmas", Edited by Bodie Hodge
By Steven Allmon
"The War on Christmas, Battles in Faith, Tradition and Religous Expression" is a wonderful compilation of writings and beautiful pictures and illustrations edited by Bodie Hodge. The book contains 23 chapters with a range of subjects from The Nativity to Saint Nicholas. I have read other books I thought were about this subject with similar titles including "The Battle for Christmas" by Stephen Nissembaum. I thought this book would be more of the same, I was wrong. Somehow, this book is different.
I have read in numerous books the correlation between Christmas and the Roman celebration of Saturnalia which occurred around December 17th through the 23rd. Hodge gives a very compelling argument that the origins of these Roman and Greek gods were actually the very descendants of Noah. Keep in mind that these people lived for hundreds of years and would be looked at by their descendants (whom they were probably being outlived) as gods. I found it interesting that these "pagan" festivals were originated as celebrations of the long life of people in the Bible! As these celebrants distanced themselves from the one true God, their celebrations became more idolatrous and profane.
Let me end this review by stating that I am a Christmas nut...listening to Bing in the spring (really all year around) and watching "It's a Wonderful Life" in June (O.K. I watch Christmas movies all year around also). I thought I knew everything about Christmas, until I read this book. "The War on Christmas" is full of information that I did not know or never thought about. Though the illustrations and pictures are glorious, the real treasure is the writing. This book really changed the way I look at Christmas.
At 144 pages "The War on Christmas" is short enough not to take up too much of your busy Christmas season, but powerful enough to really make the season matter. I highly recommend this book.

The War on Christmas
By Ginger L. Holloway
The War on Christmas was a book I received from Handlebar Publishing. This is an interesting book, as it addresses many concepts of Christmas within the Christian tradition. When I first received it, I imagined it to be about pagan culture and how it is attempting to remove the traditional idea of Christmas from society. In some ways, I was right. It does discuss cultural ideas and issues Christians may deal with while celebrating Christmas. But it does much more than that. The book begins with the concept of Christmas itself and why it is important. There is a lot of history in the book to remind us of the origins of Christmas. Overall, it reminds us that Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ, regardless of any other associations we may have with the holiday. Culture often overshadows the purpose of Christmas. Sometimes even Christians are known for focusing solely on Christ's birth, rather than His entire purpose. Christmas, as any other day, should be a time for gratitude, reflection, and acknowledgement of the Christ. It is much more than His birth. It is a celebration of His willingness to be a sacrifice for us, and to come to earth in the form of an infant in order to fulfill His purpose. The book walks through many of Christmas's traditions and gives the history and explanations for them. For example, the book discusses the date of Christmas and why it is celebrated in December. This book also discusses other parts of the Christmas tradition, such as the wise men, the manger, and whether or not X-mas is an appropriate way to write Christmas. The book did seem repetitive at times, and sometimes asked questions in an attempt to move the narrative forward. Overall, though, the information made me examine my celebration of Christmas more deeply. It made me stop and reflect on my motives during this time of year, and helped me focus on Christ as the purpose of celebration. I think it is a worthy read.

A Thought Provoking Book - Well Written, BUT, Didn't Change My Mind....
By Lisa
For the past few years, I've struggled with the holiday of Christmas - BUT - not for the reasons you might think.
I became a born again Christian over 20 years ago. At that time, Christmas became all about Christ.
When I married and had children, we emphasized Christ. Always! A certain jolly fat man dressed in red was never part of our celebration.
And then I began to ponder the whole idea of Christmas. The relationship between it and other pagan festivals occurring around that date, whether or not it's appropriate to celebrate my Savior's birthday on a specific date when no one knows His true birth date. And, the fact that the Bible tells us to remember Jesus' death (and not His birth) until He comes.
My husband and I would have the same similar conversation with my concerns each year. He would patiently listen and then as head of our household decide that we would continue our family's normal pattern of celebrating the birth of Christ.
Recently I was blessed to be a part of the launch team for The War on Christmas.
War on Christmas
In The War on Christmas, Author Bodie Hodge states,
"We hope to get into the meaning of Christmas, the origin of Christmas, misconceptions surrounding Christmas and other aspects (including some of the debate surrounding Christmas) that you may not of heard of. Our hope is that you grown in your spiritual life by learning about this popular holiday with your Bible in hand as you examine the popular topics surrounding Christmas."
Though all 144 pages, Jesus and celebrating Him ONLY is stressed. Scriptures are given to support this as well as a DETAILED timeline of Christ's birth, the Christmas Star and more are drawn out and well written.
Fascinating facts such as the meanings of many Greek words found in scripture, Greece's ancient inhabitants and how they relate to Noah and what this has to do with Christ's birth -plus- foundational truths from the Bible going back to Genesis are included.
Also in this book: misconceptions of Christmas, the word "X-mas", The 3 Kings, "Hark the Hearts Angels Sing", and The Nativity. Biblical genealogies and their importance are explored as well.
One of the questions posed is, "Why not take the distorted pagan elements of Christmas and change them to biblical elements to honor Christ?" I have also heard Christians apply this type of thinking to Halloween -- which is blatantly pagan through and through. I personally believe this is not setting us apart from the world. Rather it is the `dressing up' of witchcraft in order to seem acceptable. And in that regard, that's not what Christmas should be.
The author makes some great points and backs them with scripture. Though I do believe there's not just a war on the holiday - but on Christ our Lord period!
As for me, I conclude that it's best to keep an attitude of praise and thankfulness to my Savior and to remember his birth EVERYDAY!
